That Hang-dog Look

Cats are odd creatures. Every species has its quirks, of course, but I'm sure that cats have more of them than other animals. They seem, for instance, to be boneless, and able to sleep or rest in any position.

My big boy Renn loves his cylinder-house cat-tree. He spends much of his time there, and, except for night, when he sleeps on the bed, he snoozes almost exclusively in the cylinder. He will rest with his head at a right angle to his body. That would leave a human with a permanent twist to the neck. But Renn finds it comfy.

Then there is this pose. Renn will hang his head like this for five, ten, fifteen minutes. He may be studying the floor, noting the difference between rug and carpet, carpet and linoleum; he may be pondering the fabric of the cat-tree; he may be thinking about existence.

Or he may enjoy the feeling of blood rushing to his head.

In any case, it appears to do him no harm. He spends a certain amount of time lolling his head over the side of the cylinder and then pulls it in. Enough thinking for now; time for a nap. Right, you lazy dog?

  1. Both my boys will hang their heads over the tallest cat tree too, though I don't recall either Annie or Chumley doing that, or certainly not for any length of time. I can't imagine that the sensation of blood rushing to the head would be pleasant, but Renn apparently doesn't mind! Would that we, too, could sleep in such a variety of positions without needing physio or chiropractic care after. Ha!

  2. Love all the photos. Cats are funny creatures. Our last cat Sam would only sleep at night with us from October to April. Other times he had a chair in the basement he loved to sleep on
I think Renn does enjoy the blood rushing to his head!

  3. Renn is sooo cute, and he looks so comfortable. Cats do seem to be able to get comfortable in the oddest positions. My Alex, who is quite chubby, likes to sleep on his back with his paws straight up.

  4. Renn is such a handsome guy! Love his photos & you're right, how can that be comfortable. My two cats just curl in a ball& snooze for many hours. I have always been a dog only owner till a few years ago. Kinda worried in the beginning b/c they slept so much. So that's normal, I'm still learning but your blog really has good info. Thank you!

    1. I try to keep mine active by playing, but if they do that for ten minutes straight I'm lucky! Sleeping and eating are their principal 'activities'.

I was fortunate to maintain contact with the rescue-group from whom I adopted my first cat; they were and are an immeasurable help. The Cat Blogosphere is full of knowledgeable pet-owners, so don't be shy in asking questions of any of the bloggers.

  5. I love the photo with Renn hanging out of the mouth of his cylinder. Looks like his spaceship has just landed and he is having a first look at the new planet.

    1. Ha! I hadn't thought of that. It may be very well what that scientist is thinking...

  6. Funny Renn! I wonder if it is the blood rushing to his head that he enjoys? My Shady liked to hang out of the cat tree in a similar fashion, but with her front paws dangling down as well.

  9. Flynn never does that, but Eric would often sleep on the sofa with his head hanging down from the arm and his front legs dangling over too.
