It Was Inevitable

This was perhaps inevitable.

I am heading back to work tomorrow (while that too was inevitable, that’s not the inevitability to which I was referring). I have been on holiday for three weeks. I was able to stay home, if need be, any one of those twenty-one days. Tonight, my kitchen sink plugged up permanently, and a plumber must come in and clear the pipe.

That means I will have to sequester not just Parker, but all the cats, for the day. Parker will be in the library, as always, but the four perma-cats will go into the bedroom, with the requisite litter-boxes and water. They won’t like it, especially Cammie, but they won’t kill each other. I hope.

If this had happened any other day in June, I could have remained at home for the plumber’s visit. The cats need not have been packed away and I could make sure all were safe. As it is, I am not certain when the plumber will come tomorrow, or even if he can come tomorrow. The beasts may have to spend more than one day locked up. Timing is everything – and I didn’t have it in this case.

However, that aside, my holiday was a good one. I am not one who goes back to work ‘re-charged’, ‘energised’, or what have you. Less than one minute back at work and it will be as if I had never left. But the days off I had were enjoyable in and of themselves, and for that, I am grateful. I was able to accomplish a great deal that needed doing and I relaxed, as well. Not everyone has that luxury.

Now, I start the count-down until my next holidays. That too is inevitable.

  1. OH John, isn't it also inevitable that when times is up on vacation, something "always" happens to the home, the vehicle or ourselves that requires us to be there. For me it was a water heater draining into the kitchen floor! I didn't know until I walked into the kitchen at 0330. I was up to get ready for work on day shift. I had to leave the key hidden for the plumber and Admiral there by herself and trust. The water heater was replaced with the plumbers choice and reinstalled down under the house on the crawl space. Could not take another day off, though I tried.

    1. Water-heaters are the worst: expensive and inconvenient. I hope the Admiral wasn't too upset.

  2. Oh, jeepers. Murphy's Law is in full operation here. I have my fingers crossed the plumber comes today and all is sorted out quickly.

As for work, best of luck! I don't return feeling energized, either, so fully understand.

The boys are sending their purrs to all!

  3. That is unfortunate. But it is always the way! Hope the plumbers are able to come in and get things fixed so the cats won't have to be cooped up more than one day. Although you know they're probably totally OK with it. Yes, indeed when I was working the first day back from vacation was like I was never away!!

  4. It's bad enough to have to return to work after being on vacation, but on top of that, plumbing problems! There's never a dull moment at your house, huh! Being an apartment renter, I can relate! Any time the maintenance men have to fix something in my apartment, I have to hide the cats. Paws and fingers crossed that everything will go well with the repairs to your sink, and that things at work won't be too bad.

  5. The Plumbing Gods have a bizarre sense of humor. I will always have vivid memories of the time a pipe in my front yard decided to burst...at 7:30 pm on a Sunday. Fun fun fun!

  6. Oh no! Here, 0134h Saturday ( plumbers weekend premium rate) toilet hopelessly clogged. Saturday 1410h , plumber arrives and leaves 400.00$ richer. Tree roots have invaded the line, big time. Looks like hot dogs for me for the foreseeable future. Good luck, dear friend.

    1. The cost of repairs is one thing about owning a house I do not miss. Plumbers love the weekend calls, but I guess with tree-roots, repairs had to be done some time. But even living in an apartment, dinners of beans are well-known here.

  7. Plumbing problems always seem to have bad timing. My sink is showing signs of acting up too. I am sure the cats will find a way to at least tolerate each other's company for the day. I am like you, do not feel relaxed at all upon returning to work - it always feels like being in an avalanche!

    1. The only good aspect about returning to work after a long holiday is that any mistakes one made prior to leaving have been dealt with and forgotten by the time one returns...
