Portia's Constitutional

Portia likes the fresh air. She is often at the door leading to the concrete ditch. When Hector first came, Po was forced to find a new place in which to relax, as the library was, for the time being, out of bounds to her. She settled on the cat-tree in the sitting room by the sliding door. It turned out that she rather liked her decision, especially when the glass was opened to the screen door, and she could smell the outside.

Now, she has a habit. After each meal, she waits for me to open the glass door to the screen. Her eagerness is such that she will trot beside or in front of me to the door, anticipating its opening. Sometimes, she will croak a reprimand about my speed being insufficient.

This is Portia’s constitutional. Being unable, and probably unwilling, to go outside for a walk (however much good that would do her figure), she nonetheless enjoys how the outside comes to her. What I am going to do when the winter comes, I don’t know. The air is already chilly at night; this evening, there is a stiff wind, which is lowering the temperature further. Po doesn’t spend all night at the door, but long enough for the Cosy Apartment to lose some of its cosiness as the air inside cools to equal the air outside.

But that’s in the future, albeit the near future. For now, my round girl will take the air, smelling what the world brings her. And I will put on a sweater.

  1. Awww that is kind of you to think about how much she needs the fresh air. Our catdoor jams if it is let down, so I have it taped open every day so we get a bit of fresh air in our living room all day.

Could you tape up a strip of thick bubble wrap up above Portia height to the top of the door frame, so leaving her a little gap, but insulating 3/4 of the screen?

    1. That would probably make the view indistinct. I’d get complaints from the others on that account, and from Portia, too, when the door is at last closed and she is content to look out.

  4. It's so sweet that she wants her "window whiffies" after each meal. I suspect that once she gets a blast of real winter wind in her face, she'll be happy to look out the CLOSED patio door. LOL.

  5. If she's anything like Precious, as soon as the temperature has really brought and her nose gets cold she might not be as anxious to have the door open. But in the meantime she's having a nice delightful time and whether you need it or not, you get the air out the apartment a lot.

  6. It is nice that she can enjoy the fresh air. Maybe (hopefully) as the days get colder she will decide the warmth is more important.

  7. Looks like Portia is saying thank you in the last photo.
Since TomTom can no longer be outside, I open a window for him too! It's getting quite chilly here in northern Illinois but we must keep our cats happy!

  8. The things we do for our cats. I'm sure she appreciates and once it gets really cold she'll decide she'd prefer to simply watch out the window.

"I said, open the door, dude...NOW!"

  12. During the summer, I would leave the sliding glass back door open all night, because the cats loved finally getting some cool air. But once the temperatures began to plunge at night, they were more than happy for me to leave the door closed so they could snuggle on their blankets instead. Portia will probably feel the same. I hope so, anyway. I wouldn't like to see you turned into a popsicle this winter.

  13. I see Portia has you well trained. It will be interesting to see if she still wants the door open once the weather turns cold.

  15. I enjoyed, and I have lived every day with the reply you gave Miss Ellen above. Yes, we indeed do what we must. That is part of being in a cat family.
