Moments to Celebrate

Life without Tucker will be different, but it goes on. I will be thanking each person who was kind enough to leave words on Tucker’s passing; some will be thanked via comments on their blogs, others through replies to comments they have left me. It will take some time, but I hope not to miss anyone.

In the meantime, the Cosy Apartment is growing accustomed to Hector, and he is growing more accustomed to roommates and routine. He is less ravenous when it comes to food, no longer thinking, or, perhaps, hoping, that each bowl or each movement toward putting something on the floor means food for him. He is splashing water from the water-bowls less. This is the result of a combination of advice from readers and Hec simply changing his drinking habits, maybe seeing that what was necessary outside is not inside.

Most importantly, he is less of a bother to his foster-siblings. Hector still chases Neville at times, and now and then pounces on Renn, but it’s nothing like it was. On the weekend, I watched my big boy - who is now less daunted by the newcomer’s presence - walk past Hector. The latter waited a moment, then ran up to Renn and slapped him almost gently on the bum. Renn gave a jump, but that was it. This is a more typical incident now than the earlier assaults. Neither Neville nor Renn are concerned at Hector’s proximity when all want a snooze.

And, for the first time, Hector, of his own volition, climbed onto my lap. I have been placing him there from time to time, an action with which he has no objection, but this is the first instance of him placing himself there. He even fell asleep for several minutes.

However bad life can be - and the death of a friend is very bad indeed - there are moments to celebrate. We celebrated a little in the Cosy Apartment this weekend.

  1. What fun to see Hector taking up just a bit of space at the edge of the bed next to the pillow while Neville and Renn are having a bit more stretching room. Sounds as if Hector is growing up a bit more and it shows in his actions and reactions to his current room mates.

  2. Ah! Bless! Sounds as though in a little
    sadness, things are coming together!
And..All of them on the bed looks lovely,
and a friendly atmosphere! despite the
spanking of Renn's bottom! HeHe! :)

  3. I'm glad it was a peaceful weekend, with those minutes of Hector on your lap. I hope you have an abundance of moments to celebrate in the coming days and weeks. :-)

  4. Glad to hear things are settling down with Hector. I'm sure he's finding his place in the Cosy Apartment. And a little extra lap time is good for both of you.

My Saku never sat on my lap until Sami passed away. I guess that was her spot and he knew it. Now he can be a pest but I find it soothing ....most of the time.

  5. It sure sounds like Hector has turned a corner! No question about it, life goes on around us, to us, through us. It seems harsh to one with a wounded heart, but maybe again, all that propels us forward helps us heal too.

  6. Chili Bruce is a semi-lap kitty; I can place him there or he'll jump up himself, but the duration is very random.
The PO'M was my lap cat; always there, and would stay for hours if I could have sat that long.
Don't expect CB to do likewise; I just rejoice in the cuddle time.

  7. It's good to hear Hec and your other cats are adjusting to each other. Hector seems like such an amiable guy, I was hoping a certain level of peace would break out before too long.

  8. It looks like Hector is enjoying life at the Cosy Apartment. I loved the pictures of Hector on the bed with Renn and Neville. Does that mean you now have to sleep on the sofa?? :-)

  9. I am glad they are all settling down peacefully. Cats can sense so much more than humans and Hector must realise you are sad. Giving you lap time is his way of comforting you, I am sure.

  10. It's strange how the atmosphere changes when a dear one leaves us. I experienced that when Lucy passed and even my dog, Maisie. I'm glad the trio are getting along together (let's hope it stays that way).
All of us in blog world are missing Tucker too. I never met him but your photos and stories drew me close to him. He was like an extended family member. Thank you for sharing Tucker's life with us. Please take care John and my thoughts are with you and your trio.

    1. Thank you. Yes, Tucker was a great presence; not a big, imposing one, but constant and optimistic. And yes, I have noticed things changing among the others with his departure.

  12. This made my day when you posted it. How accurate that list was for most of us cat parents. They are first in the super important things...food, meds and medical help. BUT we have to keep up so we can keep THEM up. #amiright ? And seeing those two on the bed...arms reaching out...oh my! SQUEEEEEE.
