Hector's New Toy

Most cats like boxes, even if it’s a preference as marginal as simply standing in a box-lid for a few minutes, as does my big boy, Renn. More typical is my foster-cat, Hector. He enjoys boxes of all sizes, though when he tires of a particular box, he starts chewing pieces off of it and tossing them aside.

Recently, I dropped a smallish box, with lid-flaps, on the floor for Hector’s pleasure. At some point, it was tipped on its side, and he seemed to delight in using it as a shallow cave. I decided to bring him a larger box, so he could have that enclosed feeling cats seem to enjoy. He has been using it since. The best things in life really are free. (Well, if you are a house-cat, everything in life is free, but you get the idea.)

  1. This boy likes enclosed spaces like the plastic steps and now his cave. Very cat-like it seems. He is such a handsome boy with his shiny coat of black fur.

  2. I love all the pictures and the last one is such a winner! Look at that eye peering g back at you!!! I still have a tee -tiny box, a few inches by a few inches that my Admiral found on the floor and always stood with her two front feets in it. So much you could see that slight darkening on the cardboard from her pads. It was so endearing I will keep that box forever and ever.

  3. Ah, that's great! I hope Hector continues to enjoy his "cave" for quite a while. :-)

Nicki was a great fan of attacking/chewing any cardboard available and spitting it out; it was less about being IN the box. Derry is more like Renn, I suspect; a marginal interest in boxes. He'll cautiously pop in for a few moments, then lose interest. (As he did with the kitty cave he got before Christmas.) I think in Derry's case, he prefers to be either unreachable by being under the bed and thus safe, or somewhere that gives him more options for escape.

  8. All cats love boxes, and it seems Hector is no exception. I have 4 or 5 boxes around my apartment that the cats love to play in. It seems we spend a fortune on cat toys, and the cats prefer the box!

  9. I agree with Roberta's comment. We could give our cats all the toys in the world but they are happier with free boxes. Oh well :-)

  10. What a cutie! Almost all of my cats enjoyed boxes, though Sami and Saku loved them best. That has tempered now that Saku has reached, what I hope is his mid-life. He's also the one that loves to tear paper when the mood strikes him.

    Enjoy that Hector!

  12. Ernie's the biggest box lover of my cats. Of late, he has favored an empty Rolling Rock box I left on the floor for what I thought would be a few minutes. I still can't figure how he fits himself in it.
