Anti-climax

Some time during the night, the abscess on Minuet’s face opened and some blood and puss came out, though not enough to reduce the swelling. I suspect it did some good anyway. I kept her isolated in the library over night, principally so no other cat would pilfer her food. She ate a decent amount. This afternoon, Min visited the doctor.

It was a bit of an anti-climax, as no definite cause of her inflammation could be found. Her lip was too swollen for a good observation to be made. I was given some anti-biotic to put into her, by mouth, twice a day for a week. Fortunately, it is liquid, so it will be easy for me, though possibly painful for her. Once the anti-biotic reduces the swelling, if it does, I must take Min back to the doctor for an assessment.

The fact that the swelling opened a bit suggests to me an outside injury, which would be preferable to a dental cause. A problem with Madame’s teeth would need surgery to fix, and of course at her age anaesthetic is almost an impossibility. Indeed, just to lance the swelling, as was discussed at the hospital today, would have required sedation, and so was ruled out.

While I was at work, Min wet outside her litter-box twice today, for the first time since her initial weeks with me. But I attribute that to the pain and stress of her predicament. I expect that problem to subside with the swelling. At the hospital, my sunflower behaved very well. She purred as I stroked her and spoke to her (despite her deafness), ceasing only when the doctor was present. She nonetheless allowed the staff to clean her and examine her and, when she came home, climbed the cat-tree in the library to sit in the warmth of the sun’s light. Though the discomfort of her situation may cause litter-box irregularities, Minuet seems determined not to let her current affliction get the best of her. She remains a lady.

  3. Awww, she was so stressed and hiding it well, until the swelling gave it away...and further indignities ensuing...

Glad she seems to feel better and sure hope the antibiotic does the trick.

  7. Poor girl, but hopefully the antibiotics will bring the swelling down and ease the pressure.
I am talking many years ago now so may no longer be relevant. If we had a cat or dog to treat with a very painful wound we would rub an anaesthetic paste on it before before injecting anaesthetic to lance an abscess. It avoids the need for GA.

    1. That might have been a good idea for Min. The doctor I consulted is pretty young and new, alas.

  8. Certainly do hope that antibiotic takes care of everything. And that
Minuet does not have any teeth that need to be pulled. It was probably a nice relief for you that she felt like climbing up and lying in the sunshine.

  9. Oh sweet girl. That is what happened to Robin when she too had a swelling of the cheek. Meaning she went immedictely to the Vet. It was lanced I know, and she came home the next day. It was too long ago to recall what the Vet may have said was the matter. She was a young girl then. And an inside outside girl, the last one I ever had Everyone else remained inside after her. Minuet you are upset with your routine upset and some pain. It will all come out right. Your Dad is right, You are still a lady.

  11. It does sound like there's no problem with her teeth, thankfully. On the last post, someone suggested that she had been bitten by some insect. Perhaps it was that, or she simply somehow scratched her face, and it became infected. (With all her floof, it would be hard to notice a scratch or some other small injury.) In any case, the antibiotics should clean it up. (By the way, once she finishes the course of antibiotics, do you have access to any kitty probiotics to get her digestive bacteria back to normal?)
