Bereft

Bear-Bear died yesterday, just before six o’clock in the evening.

His condition had deteriorated greatly in the last week, and there was discomfort and little joy in his life. He was taken to his veterinarian who sent him away from me. I will write more about the extraordinary BB tomorrow or the next day.

Bereft is from the Old English word ‘bereave’, which means ‘to steal’. The bandit clans who lived in the Middle Ages on both sides of the English-Scottish frontier were known as Border Rievers, because of their lifestyles. It’s how I feel: Bear-Bear was robbed of half his life. But God gave me a piece of it to share, and I am grateful.

Godspeed, Bear-Bear.

  1. Oh, I'm in tears reading this. I had so hoped he would have far longer with you. Bless you for caring for him and loving him so well, I'm glad he had this time, albeit short, to know what a wonderful (foster) home could be like.

Purrs from the boys, peace from me.

  5. I am so very very sorry to hear that your beloved Bear Bear had to cross the RB. It is a very hard and difficult choice we have to make, but know you did what you know Bear Bear needed the most. Loving compassion. Because it is with the greatest love that we do the thing we most desperately do not want to do. Sending you much needed soft purrs and snuggly comfort. Please be gentle with yourself and do not judge yourself harshly, and remember love is eternal and as long as you have love in your heart for Bear Bear he will always be with you.

  10. What a great face Bear-Bear had. I'm very sorry for your loss.

At least you were able to give him a good home and when the time came, end his suffering quickly and painlessly. I know that's never nearly an adequate consolation for losing a pet,but it's something.

  13. This is such sad news. You worked so very hard to give him a good life and worked tirelessly to stay his health issues. We never know when we must pass from our mortal world to that which comes after. Some may count days while Bear Bear would argue that he was given such love he had a full compliment. Until we all meet again forever young and pain free my friend

It is such a difficult time when we realize that there is nothing more that can help our kitties and we must release them from their suffering.
