A Sign of My Times

The house is sold. The buyer’s realtor put up the ‘sold’ sign on Friday, so I suppose the deal is done. I won’t feel entirely secure until after the possession date, which is January 15th, and my share of the purchase price (after the mortgage is paid off, the realtor is given his commission and the lawyer gets a bit) is given to me. I think I will have something like $27.35. Well, perhaps a bit more. I think there will be a small amount for emergencies, which will be handy.

Now comes the next hardest part: moving. I have a month to do it, but that is a relatively short time considering all the packing to be done. The cats will have to undergo more disruption, with boxes all over the house and objects disappearing from shelves. And then the shelves disappearing. When the day of the move arrives, I will arrange for the beasts to go into one room from which everything will have already been cleared. They will then be taken to the new apartment after nothing else has to be transported. That’s the plan, anyway.

I would like to thank everyone for their best wishes over the last few weeks. Still, nothing will feel right until after I vacate the house and am installed with the cats in the new apartment, and nothing else will get done until then, I suspect. But it’s only a month away, so life will be settled soon. It’s only a month away, so I’d be better get busy.

  2. So glad everything worked out John. When we have moved various times over the years I find a short closing date is the best. The waiting kills me! You have a great plan in place so I imagine everything will work out.
    Take care.

  3. Yay! Congratulations! What a relief that soon it will be over with. Hope your move goes well!

  4. Congratulations on the sale, I'm glad for you that this part is done. If you tend to hold onto things that aren't (a) useful or (b) beautiful to you in some way (stuff...not the cats--lol), it might be a good time to declutter. Less to move if you donate "stuff" now! :-)

OMG, please don't be like my mom, who moved to her new place with two previously opened 30-year old bottles of liquor (gin and rye). Seriously. I made her pour them down the drain when I was there. Oy.

Good luck! Hey, you could have a packing party with friends and/or family. Provided they could pack and label properly. :-)

  5. That is good news. The last time I moved, Miss Pops loved the boxes but was a bit weary about all the changes. On moving day I let her hide in her usual spot, then came back to the house and she came straight out to see me, so I popped into into her carrier and moved her over. She did fine.

Good luck with everything, we don't envy you your move but it will be good to get things moving along after so long in limbo.

  8. Congratulations John and Kitties! This is wonderful news! We are glad you realized there princely sum of $ 27.35. It's a start!
Even though it may be sad leaving your lovely home, a fresh start is an exciting prospect as well.
Set up your packing boxes and start packing whenever you get you hands on something that can be packed now. There's always more than you think. Same a bit of time to enjoy this festive season. I'm so happy for you.

    1. I will be packing whenever I can in the next few weeks. I suspect however slow a day may be, the amount of time available for packing will be fleet. A chore now will be to find enough boxes.

  9. Hi John,
I have been reading "I Have Three Cats" for several months now, and I certainly can identify with what's going on with you and your wonderful cats. My 19 year old cat, Jeremy, has been diabetic for a number of years, so I was certainly interested to read about the care Tucker receives. I moved a few years ago, and like you, I had a problem finding an apartment that would accept my 6 cats. There will be a period of adjustment for you and the cats, but it sounds like things are finally coming together for you. I wish you much luck and happiness in your new home.

    1. Thank you for your comments. Did you have to pay extra for your apartment to accept the cats? I am looking forward to the move, now that the house is sold. For good or ill, I look upon this chapter of my life as over, and am ready for the next.

    2. Thank you for your reply. Yes, I did have to pay an extra security deposit. However, a few years ago, in addition to the extra security deposit, management instituted an additional monthly fee per pet. Luckily, this didn't effect me as had I moved to my apartment before the new policy became effective. I'm sure your move will be quite an adjustment for your cats. It may take awhile for them to get used to their new home. But be patient, and in time they will settle in. My best wishes to you!

  11. We send purrs and prayers of support.
Maybe take some towels and lay them out so every cat can lay or sleep on them. Then move them to the new apt and viola, the kitties have their own scents where you move to giving comfort.
Purrs from all of us fur the holidays

  13. Congrats on the sale of your house! You have a lot of work over the next month, but at least you are no longer in limbo not knowing when it would sell or when you would be moving. I hope all goes well.

  14. That is good news! But I suspect a little sad too. Saying good bye to one's home, even if the move is much wanted, is sad. I hate packing and moving - this is largely the reason I still reside in a small apartment. The cats will enjoy the boxes! I wish you and the kitties all the best John. From Eileen and Jessica
