A Feline for the Working-day

I am trying to spend some time with Raleigh to ease his isolation in the bathroom and socialise him after who knows how long living the life of a feral cat. He did not become feral, of course. Last night, he proved it beyond a doubt.

I sat beside him on the floor. For comfort, he has his thick teal-hued blanket, which he seems to like, but I urged him to come onto my lap. At first, he just leaned against me. Then, of his own volition, he climbed onto me. He curled up like an expert, and purred. We snuggled for about twenty minutes this way.

He clearly knew human affection at some point – or, perhaps, he clearly wanted human affection at some point. How he must have missed the company of people during his rough times outside.

He is feeling much better than he had been, I can tell. He still looks a mess. His eyes are running with thick goop, and perhaps always will. His nose is still crusty, as is his mouth. But they are improving. He isn’t grooming himself much. With his susceptibility to illness, he may never be a pretty cat. He won’t win a home with his looks. But the most important part of a cat is inside. Remember the words of Henry V, in the eponymous play by Shakespeare, when the young king defends his dirty and ragged army to the French herald:

“We are but warriors for the working-day;
Our gayness and our gilt are all besmirch’d
With rainy marching in the painful field;
…And time hath worn us into slovenry.
But, by the mass, our hearts are in the trim.”

Certainly, Raleigh’s heart is in the trim.

  1. I think Raleigh looks adorable. And I'm so happy he's finally getting the affection he's obviously longed for.

    1. With FIV, he may not be adopted but he will be safe and cared for until then.

  3. I'm just a puddle and in tears, my heart overflowing with so many emotions. That last photo... I don't have words. For however long Raleigh has on this earth, I hope every day is filled with love, that every day offers a lap and a gentle touch. ♥️♥️♥️

  4. Kea said it best. I too, hope he finds a home where he will be cared for and given lots of love and lap time.

    He might be a bit rough looking now, but he's still a handsome fellow.

  7. This Is so wonderful! This dear boy was able to feel confident enough with you to accept from you what he so desperately wanted...someone to hold him and comfort him. Tears are falling ...
    His ragged condition shows less about his FIV status and more about how ill prepared this sweet, gentle, well socialized boy was to cope with being homeless.
    Someone he can trust, good food. a stable home and a chance to let go of the constant stress he must have felt will go a long way in returning him to health . John, all of readers are so happy he is with you. For this, we thank God.

    1. I'm sure you are right about the stress. Raleigh is quite alert and open when in the bathroom, his safe spot. I have been bringing him into the bedroom and library for an hour or so each day - without other cats present - and he has quite a ways to go before feeling comfortable there. But his fur already is softer and smoother.
