New Year's Eve at the Cosy Apartment

I spoke with Tucker’s doctor yesterday about my roly poly’s latest ‘curve’, the measurement of his diabetes management. The veterinary was very pleased with the shape of the curve and its range; the lowest reading for Tucker’s blood-sugar was just where it should be (7.8). The only caution that the doctor made was that she wouldn’t want it to go much lower, with his newly diagnosed kidney issues ready to cause trouble. But, so far so good.

Now that the Mirtazapine is finished, Tucker’s appetite is already lessening, but with a combination of cat-food (for the ingredients he needs) and some human-level pork and chicken (for the ingredients he likes), I think he will do all right. The doctor also approves of the continued salmon-oil dosing that I am giving Tucker. My sausage-shaped cat doesn’t care for receiving the oil, as it is probably in too great an amount at once for his liking; it would make me sick, frankly. I probably am putting too much in the syringe (between two and three millilitres a day) but it is having an advantageous effect on his coat, which is very soft compared to its previous condition, and signs of dandruff have diminished. As well, his bald spot has disappeared, though there is still a patch of less dense fur on his back. The doctor told me that the oil is also providing calories for Tucker.

As 2019 ends, it is ending positively. I don’t mind seeing it depart, but its last weeks seem to be making up a little for its earlier failings. I would like to wish everyone a happy new year, and a safe New Year’s Eve. I will be staying in with the cats, as always; my town doesn’t have many night-spots to hit and, anyway, I’m at the age when the best I can do is hit the late afternoon spots…

  1. This is good Tucker news!
We used to walk a few blocks to the fireworks display in our city's downtown, then we'd drive. Nowadays, we watch from the house windows (no leaves on the trees to impede the view), and dive into bed the moment the noise is over. I will be working with others to convince our municipality to use silent fireworks in the future. Happy New Year to you and yours!

    1. Thanks, Willie. This has been a challenging year, certainly - and as I age, I like challenges less and less! May your year be filled, if with challenges, then also with triumphs. Happy new year!

  3. It sounds like you've received good news about Tucker. That's terrific! Let's hope that this is the start of a new year that's full of good things! From my house to yours, and from my "fur-kids" to yours - Happy and Healthy New Year, John!!

  4. I've found that the older I get, the more reclusive I want to be. Nowadays, I prefer spending NYE drinking cheap champagne, eating homemade tamales (for good luck!) and watching New Year's shows on YouTube.

2019 has not been a happy year for me, but, like you, I see positive signs on the horizon. May the new decade be a bright one for us all!

    1. When Parker was failing, you had mentioned that you might be facing a loss; I didn’t pursue that, as I dislike intruding, but I hope that your expectations were, in this instance, confounded. In any case, I hope 2020 will treat you exceedingly well. (And, substitute tea for champagne and toast for tamales, and my New Year’s Eve is similar to yours. (Boy, do I sound like a middle-aged secondary character from an Ealing comedy…))

    2. That could be worse: I'm the stereotypical character who popped up in all the Victorian comedies: Eccentric Middle-Aged Spinster Surrounded By Cats.

  5. Holidays are best spent with our furry friends. I too, will be home and in bed before Precious is! So glad Tucker is holding his own and his fur has grown back a bit. Winter, even with the furnace running is just down right cold! Wishing you and the cats a Happy New Year!

  6. We send our support for Tucker and the whole family. Our Buddy is having his Gotcha Day today and will be 20 this Jan 31st. He also has renal issues and does not like his food but... with some small treats he does get enough to keep healthy.
I am spending New Years with the furs also as I prefer having given up on the wildness of my previous life. That is kind of a misnomer as I have been pretty sedate since the debacles of my early 20's. Now if only Rumpy and Einstein could follow the same tack in 20

    1. I will be stopping by to say 'hello' to Buddy on his special day. He is a lucky fellow to have such a family. But I wouldn't count on Rumpy and Einie to settle down just yet.

  7. A very happy new year from our home to yours!

I'm glad to read positive news re: Tucker, and hope that 2020 will be a good year, as healthy as possible, for you and your fur crew. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

And as for staying up to drink champagne or tea...I will be tucked up in bed before 9 PM. LOL. I haven't stayed up to ring in the new year in a long time, and likely couldn't now, even if I wanted to.

    All the very best.

    1. Having to get up at 5.30 even on days off puts a crimp in the exciting and wild life I used to live. Well, used to want to live. At last my ambitions have reached my abilities. I'm going to bed early, too...

  9. It is good news that Tucker's latest curve showed his blood sugar to be where it should be. You have had a lot of heartache through 2019 and I hope 2020 will be a much better year.
My next scan is due the end of January, so I hope it will be a good year for me too.

    1. Thank you. Since I worked today and didn't get to nap, as I like to do when I have the day off, I'm rather tired myself. I probably won't bother with midnight, either. A happy new year to the two of you.

  14. Happy New years to you John and all of your flatmates. I was happy to be on the couch with a plate of dumplings, a drink and a little grey pussycat. I am more than happy to avoid the crazy goings on in town and stay home too.
