Astrid had her kittens today. There are four of them, one black, one grey tabby and two tortoiseshells; we know the genders of the last two, of course, but the others will be a puzzle for a while.
She produced the first little one at about 10.30 this morning, and the last about three hours later. All look and are acting healthy, getting plenty of nutrition from mum. The new parent herself has eaten a large amount of soft food, is breathing normally and is calm.
Readers will understand that this is not an unalloyed blessing. While the rescue-group is happy at the successful births, they represent what shouldn’t be happening: an unsprayed cat adding to the feline overpopulation. If she hadn’t been captured, Astrid would have produced her offspring outside, and raised them feral. Some may not have survived – an unpleasant thought in itself – and those who did would have created another dozen or two or more litters, while Astrid herself would have gone on to add to the problem. An unspayed cat, living outside, can have several litters a year, and nothing would have prevented it.
But life will be good for these five. The babies will grow up socialised and hopefully find their homes soon, while their mum – now reckoned to be about a year old – will also have a chance at happiness. Until then, they will stay safe and watched over in their foster-home.
Happy birthday, little ones!

ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Astrid! I'm so glad that mamma and the babies are doing well, and hopefully they will find furever homes soon.
ReplyDeleteWell done Miss Astrid. We hope everyone is happy and well.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday babies! I am glad all are doing well and hope they all get their forever homes when the time is right. At least that is five who will not be adding to the feline population.
ReplyDeleteA joyful and happy story to wake up to...
ReplyDeleteHope they find there forever homes, and
Mum to of course...Bless!x
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday little ones and Mamma, may you be healthy and happy. I am glad to read the babies are here.
We will never know how many litters Sweetie had, before we TNR'd her, but sometimes I think about her unknown babies.
ReplyDeleteI understand your mixed feelings. I wish Astrid could have been spayed before she became pregnant, but I'm so thankful she and her children will be taken care of. It's a dangerous world for cats, and doubly so for the little ones. Who knows what would have happened if you hadn't been able to rescue them.
ReplyDeleteSince they were destined to be born, it is indeed wonderful they are safe and healthy and inside. I really do feel badly about feral cats and their life of the unknown.
ReplyDeleteIt's very nice to hear some great news =^x^=
ReplyDeleteWelcome to da world ! and happy birthday little mews
Aw, sweet babies. I'm thankful all are safe, and I hope they all thrive to be adopted into wonderful, loving forever homes.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday little ones! It is truly a shame that cat owners are irresponsible and fail to have their pets spayed or neutered. Wishing Astrid and her babies all the best in their forever homes.
ReplyDeleteI worry about feral cats constantly.
ReplyDeleteWishing them all the best for a long healthy loving life and family.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Astrid!
