Out of the Frying Pan...

My Siamese princess isn’t getting a break these days. Her ordeal with a hairball is done, but now she is suffering a cold.

The hairball is, I believe, defeated. There are no positive signs of its conquest but, as with Josie’s similar condition some time ago, it’s what I don’t see or find that persuades me that she is finished with it. Cammie hasn’t thrown up for days and her appetite is better.

But now, she has a cold. Her eyes are leaking and her nose is clogged. She periodically relieves this by shaking her head. She also sneezes. At first, watching her shake her head, I thought there may be an itch in her ears, an infection, perhaps. But she hasn’t scratched her ears, her head or anything else. She is just trying to clear her nostrils.

I think there may be something in her system that comes to the fore when she is stressed. She had what was reportedly a cold when she was in Regina - and that situation must have been the most stressful she’s been in for years. The hairball probably created some ill feelings emotionally, which was undoubtedly exacerbated by my necessarily forcing hairball remedy into her. So now the Camster looks sadder than ever.

I can usually tell when she feels poorly because she retreats to her cylinder-house downstairs. I would like to bring that cat-tree upstairs to the ground floor because the basement is much cooler than elsewhere, but part of its appeal to her is likely its isolation.

And Cammie does come upstairs, even in her misery, benefitting from the warmed cat-bed in the sitting room. And she makes time to lie on my lap at least once a day, and still purrs at the attention I give her, now and then spewing snot over me. Nonetheless, I am confident that though what she is experiencing may be making her feel badly, it is not serious.

Even better than continued lap-time is Cammie’s continued appetite. It’s less than I’d like, but she is still eating. She consumes a little at the usual meal-times, but I give her some soft-food whenever she sits on the food mat. I see that she is eating some hard-food, as well: she throws about debris from the bowl whenever she chooses kernels from it.

As long as my princess is getting nutrition, and is spirited enough for some affection, I’m not very worried about her. But I think she’s had enough bad luck recently. And the other cats are complaining that a certain Siamese royal is hogging the blog.

  1. Aw, poor sweetheart, yes, she's had a rough go of it lately. Lots of healing purrs to her, that she's over the cold soon. Does Lysine help? It doesn't do a thing for whatever it is that Nicki has (so not the Herpes virus in Nicki's case). But if Cammie is having a flare-up of the Herpes virus, it probably would help ease her symptoms. Really, it's like humans--when it's viral, there's not much to be done but wait it out.

  2. She's be my little princess too. She is so lovely. Perhaps she had URI when she was a kitten. It is known to stay in their system forever. When there is a little stress in their life it surfaces once again.I hope she feels better soon. Deb

  3. Sending you purrs and prayers little one. Funny but our homes consumption is down a bit. They have been taking their time with the last can both breakfast and dinner. I watched to make sure they are all taking a turn so feel confident that all are eating what they need, just not the copious amounts per usual

    1. My beasts all went through a period where every flavour, every brand became lacklustre to them. Now, they are enjoying their food again. I don't understand it, and probably never will.

  4. Oh poor Cammie! My Silas used to get colds frequently, though thankfully he didn't pass it on to the rest. Something that we did (well my son actually) that helped relieve it was to fill a small with steaming hot water, add Vicks VapoRub and sit under a large towel with the cat. He wouldn't stay there on his own, but I'd find my son sitting with him and he loved the attention.

Hopefully she is over it soon!

    1. Alas, such a solution isn't practical with Cammie, who never sits anywhere but where she wants, and doesn't tolerate any unknown objects near her. We'll just have to ride this one out, I'm afraid.

  7. Poor girl. Yes, stress affects the health of animals, as well as people. At least it doesn't sound serious.

Hope the Princess is 100% very soon.

    2. Sweet, darling girl. I wish I could stroke her beautiful head and tell her she is loved. Seems unfair that certain little ones are given so many things to bear. She'll be in our prayers..
