As most cat-owners know, the best toys are usually not the ones you buy - at least as toys. Zofia has two items in particular that she enjoys; neither of them were intended as feline playthings.
The lint-roller appears to have become her great foe. Little Miss Zed will often throw herself onto the bed in the morning - as I am making it - and one of the few ways to distract her from the billowing sheets and bedspread is a lint-roller. I will shake it at her and she will crouch behind a ridge of blanket, her eyes wide. Then, when the lint-roller is within range, she and it will exchange a rapid series of whaps. Sometimes, the roller will prod her gently. Then, there is more violence. It’s hard to take it all seriously, however, as she purrs through much of the battle.
Then there is the ring off a plastic milk-jug. This little object is a joy to Zofia. She will bat it about the floor and chase it as it slides. If it rolls onto the rugs, she will pick it up and carry it back to a more suitable surface. Then again, she will sometimes transport it to a comfortable spot, as if to gloat over her victories, in whatever contest she and the milk-jug ring engage. But, unlike the lint-roller, the milk-jug ring is her chum, a fellow gamester. Unfortunately, the milk-jug ring cannot stay for long: Zo tends to chew it into pieces, of which a few she may have swallowed. Therefore, I must retire each milk-jug ring before it disintegrates.
Zofia plays with other toys. She wrestles with the string-toy, and chases the red dot until she exhausts herself. She jumps in and out of the nylon cube, and the dirty white pompoms long ago torn off the ends of the nylon tunnel are a delight, too. But her favourites seem to be the lint-roller and the milk-jug ring. There is, after all, nothing like spending time with one’s friends and enemies.
Zofia is showing her unique purrsonality.
ReplyDeleteShe is such a cutie! I hate to think what would have happened to this happy, playful little lady if she hadn't been rescued.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, is the stick for your vertical blinds still a popular favorite?
It is, but like many youngsters, Zo plays with it when she remembers it. There is so much to play with in her world that she usually has to be at the glass doors to recall it.
DeleteThis little girl has completely gotten straight into my heart!
ReplyDeleteSuch a cutie. My Rusty prefers the cube flattened too. I wasn't happy when he tried to flatten the indoor tent I have for my great nieces to play in though.
ReplyDeleteIt must have seemed like the same sort of thing to Rusty.
DeleteThat face! Swoon!
ReplyDeleteAll the money we spend on cat (or dog) toys, and our pets prefer simple, household things. That's a lesson for us in many ways--including being satisfied with simple and/or inexpensive things in our own lives. (Milk is not exactly inexpensive anymore, of course.)
I've put catnip in the toe of a few baby socks over the years, tied the sock in a knot, and presto! a great catnip toy.
Anyway, it boggles my mind that Zofia is still waiting for her forever home, John. She's so adorable and engaging. It's a good thing we don't live nearby. LOL.
Zofia has great imagination. And that must be encouraged as with human kids, it is great play. I have finally quit giving in to my yen to buy cute cat toys and stick to what Precious likes most, her frog on a stick.
ReplyDeleteGood thing you have the milk rings to distract Zophia or you would never get the bed made ;) MOL!!!!
ReplyDeleteShe looks like she is ready to pounce all the time ;)
Purrs, Julie
The most unlikely things make the best toys.
ReplyDeleteShe is such an adorable kitten. Saku likes the lint roller too, but in his case he likes to lick it; we do call him the "lick the paste" cat.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your toys Zophia!
Gosh she's gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteShe is such a playful fun little lady!
ReplyDeleteZofia is so adorable. Like Kea said - it's a good thing I don't live nearby. (You don't ship to Philadelphia, do you??) It's amazing that cats don't need expensive things to be happy. We all could learn something from them.
ReplyDeleteToys are in the paw of the beholder! Zofia is so darn cute.
ReplyDeleteToys need not be elaborate, that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteOur Toki loved those milk rings, too...the most fun was had when I gave them a twist, so that they would bounce irregularly, and then he would go crazy. He fetched them too, if I threw one for him. But Minko enjoyed them in the chew them up way...only, so he was not allowed to have them at all. He did best with then little fur mice with feathers...which he would destroy, he played so actively with those.
Zofia will be a joy to whomever is blessed to adopt her.
