There is rather important news in the household. For as long as she has been under my care, before and after she became a part of the family, Cammie’s sole type of soft-food has been Fancy Feast. In particular, the ocean whitefish variety. She has eaten other flavours but prefers this one, and has never cared for any other brand, turning up her tiny nose at each offering. Fancy Feast is good, but I have continued to try to interest her in other kinds of soft food, always unsuccessfully.
Then two days ago, I put a dish of Merrick turkey before her. I expected the usual non-reaction. Instead, she sniffed it, nibbled some and then ate the whole portion. I gave her more, and then more. The princess consumed three portions all together. They were not large, but constituted about the same amount as she would have eaten had it been Fancy Feast. In fact, she ate as much as she would have on a day when she was rather hungry.
I thought this most strange, and so I repeated the process the next morning, and she repeated her performance. That tin of Merrick turkey was finished, so yesterday evening, I opened up the next tin. It was beef. I didn’t think that would do as well, nor did it. Cammie’s reaction was one of disappointment. However, turkey will be next on the menu after beef. Then we will see if the first incident was unique. If not, it will be on to chicken, and surf ’n’ turf, and any other flavour the princess may like. With luck, this turn of events will become routine.
Good for Cammie! Always good to have a variety of flavours.
ReplyDeleteThis made me way happier than it should have, I must be having an emotional day.. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, it made me giggle.
She'll eat the turkey Merrick until you buy a case of it. :-P
ReplyDeleteYour cats are so fortunate to have you attend to them. You provide them with a lovely home, the best of care, and much love. I rarely comment on blog posts, but have been following yours with great interest for a long time and felt compelled to let you know that yours is one of my favorite blogs. We have five cats, all rescued as kittens, all spayed/neutered and all indoor, of course. Three are siblings now nine and a half years old; one is five and a half; the eldest is sixteen and a half. Although I photograph them often, I don't blog about them, although perhaps I may someday. For now I just enjoy reading your blog and that of two other cat bloggers. I look forward to your posts.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your compliments. I enjoy telling people about my cats, and find a blog is an excellent means by which to describe them and their antics. And I can't see the glazed expressions and rolled eyes this way...
DeleteYour own cats seem to have landed on their feet when you adopted them. I hope some day you will indeed talk about them. Until then, your readership of my blog is much appreciated.
Miss pops will sometimes try other brands, but they never last long. It is always back to the feast.

I wonder what it is about this new food that appeals to Cammie. Or maybe the princess wanted to reward your kindness in being so patient with her finicky ways. My dear Jessica enjoyed Merrick tinned foods - the turkey and the chicken. Oh how I miss her! I love hearing your tales of looking after your sweet beasties.
ReplyDeletePerhaps Cammie actually decided to taste the food before disdaining it, the silly animal.
DeleteWhen a loved one leaves, everything seems to remind us of her. It can be very hard.
Oh, great news! I'm so pleased to hear Camie is allowing a bit of variety in her diet. More healthy for her. I think we'll see positive changes for Cammie in the new home. She won't feel like "the new cat " anymore.
ReplyDeleteThe princess is venturing out more in the new apartment. She is indeed treating it as her home. As for food, I will be trying different flavours as I open new tins.
DeleteThey are funny with their ways. Flynn would eat nothing but Gourmet, preferably trout. I heard that it was being discontinued so I bought up the last 72 tins they had. He has eaten 6 and informed me that I am trying to feed him poison and there is no way he is touching ttin of trout again. Doubtless he will again think it is delicious in a couple of months time. His favourite now is Sheba chicken, a make that until a month ago he wouldn't touch. Of course if I buy a good supply, I know he will decide he doesn't like it again.
