Cats Permeate My Life

Cats permeate my life, especially my cats and my routines with them.

There is a colony of unsocialized felines behind my work-place. Lately a new cat has appeared amongst the regulars, who are mostly white and black, except for a tabby with white socks. This new fellow is all-black and is still making his place. I left work one day this week and saw him slip behind a pile of wooden pallets. He evidently met other cats, as there was hissing and growling. I immediately said:

“Hey, hey! It’s alllllll right, it’s alllllll right… Calm down…”

This is what I do when my own beasts act up. What did I expect these community cats to do?

Then there’s the fact that when I see dust-bunnies on floors outside of my own apartment, I stoop to pick them up, automatically thinking them to be cat-hair. When I hear anything that sounds like a cat retching, I look up to see if it’s Cammie. I could be in the local grocery store…

And as if that’s not enough, I was at the pet-supply shop where, on the second Saturday of every month, my rescue-group shows off a cat available for adoption, and watched a dog come in with his people. He was a big, cheerful fellow. He came over to greet me and his people told me that he was very happy to be there. Though I could see his tail wagging, I nonetheless put my hand against his side - so I could feel if he was purring.

Cats permeate my life.

  2. Ha, apparently they do! I do talk to any and all critters I see, feline or other, but I don't pick up dust bunnies outside the house. Or check dogs for purring, either. :-D

Cat-like sounds, however, either positive or not so positive, always get my full attention, regardless of where I am. I guess it's a bit like being a parent and always being tuned in to the sound of your (and then any) child in distress or whathaveyou.

    1. That's its exactly I think. I am totally attuned to cats and any sound or sighting.

  3. Your post sounds quite familiar, John. I think every animal person feels the same way you do. Personally, I've walked past friends in the street, but if you're walking a dog or carrying a cat carrier, I'll notice you 5 blocks away.

  4. I love talking to all the cats sitting in their front gardens - I always give them a pat and tell them that they are good cats for sitting and waiting for their people.

  5. Sometimes I will hear what I think is a kitten or cat meowing only to realize it is a human child. When I meet a new baby I find myself responding as though the child was a cat. But I don't even pick up dust bunnies in my own home.

I hope Cammie is okay? No more throwing up?

    1. Cammie is doing well, so far. I worry about her all the time, but the new food seems to be acceptable to her, thank goodness.

  6. I am completely attuned to cats myself. Seeing, hearing...I always notice. And there is always a reaction internally. I fuss when I see outside cats on the sidewalk or worse, crossing the street and admonish them within my mind to be careful! To stay in their yard. To go in the house and stay! I look for and find Katie before I leave the house, as occasionally she will have slipped into a closet and I want its door open before I leave so she can eat and use the box.

  7. I talk to all cats I pass or see in a garden. I can't say I have ever felt a dog's side to feel if it is purring though!

  8. Can’t resist cats. At the vets I always inquire sincerely about the cat patient in the waiting area and their prognosis. I’ll talk to the cat if their owners feel the cat might like it. Must admit I never do either of those at doctors office.

  9. P.S. Hope Cammie is well. Pet her and tell her we’re thinking of her.
