A Touching Tale About Touching Tails

What about the cats? People reading this blog are probably thinking that the previous entry was the second time I have had a non-cat article in the nearly six years of writing the blog. No more of the human’s endless ego, the conceit of eternal self-adulation. What about the cats?!

As it turns out, they continue to be interesting despite me being at home most of the time. Take, for instance, last evening’s episode featuring Josie and Renn. They have traded blows a few times when both have been on the cat-trees in the bedroom. One would think there is plenty of room for two cats. There are, after all, two cat-trees, and a relatively large window out of which to gaze.

But you may notice one of the causes for the friction. Both were stimulated by something they saw outside. This led to twitching, swinging tails. My Chubs especially took offence to Renn’s appendage. The time between the cause and the effect was lengthy enough for me to leave the scene, hoping that there would be no altercation. But shortly after I left came the sound of rapid whapping. It was over by the time I returned, and the two had settled down to armed neutrality again.

But, lest one think that the Great White and my big boy dislike each other, I offer this image, taken this afternoon. The pair cannot be considered to be friends, but sometimes, they are friendly. Or not unfriendly. And that is as touching a tale as sometimes can be told.

  1. I always wonder if Pops would like a companion cat, but I do know that you never know whether they would get along and she seems contented keeping me company. It seems that your crowd seem to tolerate each other well, and at least sit close to each other.

    1. Poppy may be quite used to being an only-cat, and may not recall that there are such things as cats. She's unique, in every way.

  2. Other than something outside to get their backs up, of course we see that those two cat trees are not of equal height, so one cat is forced into the "lower" position. In our house, most times Derry will end up with the shorter end of the stick, so to speak, though sometimes he will wrestle Nicki for top spot, or even oust Nicki for top spot (that's rare). :-D

  3. Annabelle loves to swat a moving tail (with her not having one does she wonder why I wonder??) especially of her 2 brothers. Everyone knows to give Miss Boo a wide path. She is easy going unless you engage her when she doesn't want to be bothered and then she'll back whoever has bothered her down. :) Cats have such interesting responses.

  5. With 6 cats ranging in age from 9 months to 16 years, things are never dull at my house. But for the most part, everyone gets along. The cats seem to use the cat-trees and cat beds like a time share. There are occasional squabbles, but eventually things get worked out.

    1. Nine months to sixteen years! That's quite the multi-generational household.

  6. Oh the tale you tell is a familiar one to me. Especially with Sami and Saku, there is frequently the sound of whapping paws but yet at night they have their spots on the bed not far from one another.

Enjoy your holiday John...it seems you are having a great staycation.

  7. Flynn could never resist Eric's moving tail, and it always led to a bout of friendly wrestling.
It is good to see that Josie and Renn are comfortable with each other and lie close.
