A Tale of Two Cat-beds

There is extra warmth for the pair of cats who have to be sequestered while I am absent. I have been putting one of the heated cat-beds in the bedroom for Cammie’s comfort while she is locked in there. Since it is a bed from the sitting room, I suspect that she was initially confounded by its presence in the bedroom. She may think, despite the familiarity of the smell, that it is another cat-bed all together. In any case, the last couple of days, I have been placing her in the bed when putting her away in the morning. She didn’t care for my action.

Today, however, I forgot something from the bedroom and returned to it after I had put Cammie in the bed. When I opened the door, I saw that she had decided to enjoy the warmth of the bed. I am glad of this because, as she grows older, she will grow colder and, unlike the others, is trapped in one room for the day. The bed is against the heating pipe and near her little water-bowl. Barring a quick nip to eat some food and visit the litter-box, she can rest toasty all day.

Neville seems to like his new heating pad, too. It is under his towels on the library couch. He has the option of lying there or on the unheated portion of the couch, or ottoman. I have seen him do both. But this recent snowfall and accompanying cold weather put the heating pad to good use, and Nevsky apparently approved of it.

I have plugged the pad into the same outlet as the room’s lamp. There being no ceiling light, the lamp is controlled by the switch at the door. For a whole day, I had been turning off the heating pad every time I left the library and turned off the lamp. The Thin Man must have thought there was little advantage to a towel that was lumpy with no compensating quality to it. Now, I unscrew the light-bulb in the lamp when I want it turned off, leaving the switch on, and the electrical current going to the heating pad. Sometimes, however, I need a reminder.

  1. How about unplugging the lamp? Or is the plug behind something and not easily accessible? (I have the same kind of switches in the bedrooms.) Whatever works! :-)

I'm sure Cammie and Neville appreciate the warmth, especially with your recent blast of winter weather.

Oh, I just thought about a timer for the lamp...but maybe you don't need the lamp on at specific times of the day. I use a timer for my downstairs hall lamp through the dark days of winter. I hate coming home to darkness, so set it to come on before I get home, go off at bedtime, then come on again in the early hours when I get up, go off around 7 AM, after I'm gone to work. Just a thought!

    1. A timer would confuse me, I think. I turn the lamp on when the day grows dark, and turn it off when it's time for Neville to sleep. Unscrewing the light-bulb is about my level of technology for this manoeuvre.

    1. I'll be looking into those mats. It may have to wait until the weekend.

  3. LOL! This reminds me of the passenger side back door in our old Toyota, which was broken. The Hubby kept telling me not to use it, but hey, like I could remember! So, he drilled holes and screwed the door permanently closed. Here at the office, there is a switch that must remain on all of the time, so the overhead projection unit works. Well, hell, folks were always turning it OFF! The maintenance guy put a locked switch cover on, and voila! No more problems. Sometimes, we all need a foolproof way of doing things, but often, I call it 'idiot-proofing', because I am the dumdum!

  5. Ahh...It's good to hear that I'm not the only one with memory problems. And all this time I thought it was just me!! If something isn't written down, I forget to do it. Now if I can only remember to read my notes... :-)

  6. Changing locales, even with my toys, makes things different somehow. Must be our sense of smell or something. Neville, keep nice and cozy, my friend, as you watch the snow outside! - Tom x

  7. Heating pads are great! We cats do love our heat.
While we have not had snow yet, we have had cool days and nights.
Mum is the biggest wimp, she turns the furnace on to "take off the chill". We love that as the vents are in the floor and very easy to lay on ;) After all, cats love heat too ;) MOL!

  9. I leave miss pops heat pad on 24/7 and it has been fine. Reading Kim's remarks do you know about smart Wi-Fi plugs that you can switch things on and off from your phone?

    1. Good Heavens, I don't have timers because I find them too complicated. 'Smart' doo-hickeys that my telephone can turn on and off?? I'm still wrestling with the internal combustion engine.

  10. I too was thinking about the self warming mats. Of course, they gotta be in them to warm up. Cold stepping in, I guess. BUT it retains their heat. It's so blasted hot here since April, Katie doesn't need anything but a purrsonal air conditioner. Yup...reminders are needed sometimes. Have a few myself. :-)

  11. Funny, I'd would have to put a notice on the switch too. It's such a habit to turn lights off as I leave a room. I should look into a heating pad for Sasha. He tends to curl up on the couch during the day
which is in the centre of the room and away from any heat sources. At night he sleeps beside me, so I think he's warm enough then. :)
