Raleigh in the Morning

Raleigh is not faring well. His appetite has diminished further, and he seems interested in eating only the Z/D tinned food that I give to Cammie. Even with that, it was a chore to coax him to eat this morning; I had to lift him out of the cat-bed from which he wouldn’t move of his own accord. Aside from the obvious reason for eating, it is the means by which he consumes his Prednisolone, which treats his stomatitis, and which he cannot cease taking without being weaned. (And if he doesn’t take it, his mouth becomes very painful, giving more disincentive to eat.)

That the Z/D is enough to keep Peachy going is evident from Cammie, but I don’t think that, nutritionally, it is a good food. Besides that, however, is my concern that, having gone off every other food, it may be a matter of time before he no longer cares for the Z/D. Then it will come down to force-feeding him.

This decrease in appetite comes despite the on-going treatment with Mirtazapin, to stimulate his desire to eat. He is also receiving anti-biotic for any possible infection. This began because Raleigh showed symptoms of a respiratory problem. He doesn’t seem to have that any more, though I will continue the dosage for the prescribed time. Then I will treat him with Lysine, as suggested by several readers, and approved by the veterinary.

But I fear that what is troubling my Peach isn’t going to be resolved with anti-biotic or simple amino acids. I will be speaking with his doctor again this week.

  3. Here's hoping that Raleigh improves soon. Poor little guy! I wonder if his antibiotic is upsetting his stomach and that's the cause of his poor appetite. Meanwhile, I'll be interested to hear what the vet says about him when you speak to her this week.

  4. I'm so sorry to hear this. I agree with Roberta that possibly the antibiotics are affecting his appetite. In any case, I'm hoping there will be a complete recovery soon. The poor guy has had so many health issues to cope with.

  6. I am sorry that Raleigh's appetite hasn't improved. I was also wondering if maybe the antibiotics are disagreeing with him. I know from when I had to medicate Flynn how hard it was to find pills that didn't react against him.

  7. Purrs to sweet Raleigh from all of us. Antibiotics do tend to upset the tummy quite a bit.

  8. Prayers for your peachy boy. My first thought echoes others in that maybe the antibiotics are upsetting his stomach.

  9. I do hope Raleigh gets to feeling like eating better and more food soon.
I took Mirtazipine for too many years, myself. It does cause lethargy and constipation. Not really any appetite increase for this human, but
I do not know how it can affect cats. Hope Peachy is still having ok
    bowel movements on Z/D.

    1. I always warm the cats' food in the microwave oven - except for Tucker's; the Catfather likes his straight out of the refrigerator 9when he deigns to eat). I've tried the cheese with others. I will try it with Raleigh. The doctor wants to see him again...

  11. I haven't been on the cat blog for a couple of weeks. I'm so sorry to hear Raleigh isn't doing well and hope that it isn't something serious but rather as others have said a side affect of the antibiotics.
