Conqueror of the Library

Renn has not been featured on my blog in a while. It’s probably because he is a simple, well-behaved, healthy animal with few issues. He remains a little annoying at night when I wake and he, realising that I am no longer asleep, will start purring and crawl up beside me, as close as he can to my head. But it’s difficult to be angry at a cat because he likes me, so I put up with it.

He has his idiosyncrasies. Some have remained the same following the move to the apartment, some have altered. He still roams about the residence periodically, singing to himself. He is not really artistically-minded, so it may be a feline form of taking soundings, learning about the new place, so as to add to his store of scientific knowledge. Or he may have heard an irritating song on the radio and hasn’t been able to exorcise it from his brain.

Something new is his haunting of the tops of the library bookcases. Now and then, I will wonder where he is - I like to know where the cats are, especially just before I leave or go to bed - and I will find him on top of a bookcase. He seems alert when I interrupt him, and the expression on his face is one of inviting me to join him in the observance of an intriguing event. So it may be that his scholarly mind has once more stumbled upon a vantage point from which to learn something new. I doubt that he is in the library to read. Josie is the cat in the household who loves books, while my big boy prefers first-hand discoveries to knowledge taken from a printed page.

Whatever the case, he is happy in his endeavour and, until he grows so old and enfeebled that he risks falling from such heights, I will leave him in his new conquest, and hope I don’t interrupt some astonishing observation that could benefit all feline kind.

  1. We think a nice, soft and cosy folded-up throw or pad up there would enhance his scientific studies! :-)

    1. Considering the comments I'm getting, I think I'm being out-voted. I'll have to see what I can do about the tops of the bookcases...

  3. You do make me laugh! Your cats are so interesting and interested in everything it seems.
    Have a good weekend.

  4. Renn does look very alert and interested sitting there. Maybe he is enjoying his observations from a different angle.
He is like Flynn, He likes to sleep on my tummy, but I think that when he knows I am asleep he goes down by my feet. I only have to stir and he walks along me to see if I am awake and shoves his nose in my face purring his loudest purr. This happens every time I move in my sleep and wakes me, but I could never ban him from the bedroom. My husband meanwhile sleeps through it all, and can never understand why I am tired in the morning.

    1. No matter how much they disturb us, they have their places, and we can't evict them. Even if we want to some nights.

  5. I agree with Fuzzy Tales, a cozy folded up throw might just the thing for Renn. He really is a lovely boy. Renn has a fine vantage point from which to survey his new home.

PS, Holly has come to live with me. She came from a cat rescue group. She does miss her foster dads.

    1. I was wondering if another little creature would come to stay. Jessica will always be with you, just as Tungsten is with me. They cannot be replaced, but there is nevertheless room for others. Holly is lucky to be with you now.

    2. Eileen, I am so happy to hear that Holly is now living with you. As I posted to you a few weeks ago, I lost my 19 year old cat, Jeremy, shortly after New Years. And like you, I just welcomed a new kitten to my household. As John said, the new animal will not replace the one we lost, but it will ease the pain a little. Enjoy your new addition!

    3. I'm glad that you too have opened your home to anothe deserving animal, Roberta. It is good to know that once-homeless cats are being taken in by experienced and loving people.

  6. Renn sounds delightful!. Not surprising that he likes to haunt the tops of bookcases - our kitties really love being up as high as they can be.

Pet lovers please check out my homeless cat blog about the abandoned/feral cat colony I manage.

  7. The tops of bookshelves are a most excellent place for cat meditation. I have failed mine in that my current house doesn't really present that option. I try to make up for it in other ways.

    1. I'm pretty sure they don't think you've failed them in any way. Mine have found as many spots of their own as I've made for them.

  8. Maybe some non-skid matting on top of the shelves to keep Ren from sliding off after a particularly powerful jump. Cats love to be at eye level with us or perhaps higher. Looking at our ankles, chair legs and sofa skirts is so limiting. Great observation about soundings. My vet said that it seems older cats do that to re-orient themselves. My late Puffin used to repeatedly call out at night even with the lights on. I'd get up, talk to him and pet him and he'd be ok- for a few hours.
Congrats to the two newly adopted kitties and their mums. Each cat is his own entity . Wanting another cat shows that the first cat has done his job well.

  9. Roberta and John, our much cherished cats stay with us in our hearts. Roberta I think your dear Jeremy is meeting Jessica. 19 years, you must still miss him terribly. I know I miss my Jessica and still have tears. I chose Holly because she is so different from Jessica thus I feel I can allow her to be Holly. I am enjoying getting to know her as I am sure you are getting to know your little fur bundle of joy.

  10. You're right, Eileen, our cats do remain in our hearts. But the important thing is that no matter how many cats remain in our hearts, we will always have room to love more. I'm sure Jessica and Jeremy are playing together at Rainbow Bridge, and that someday we will be united with them.

  11. My babies are always in my heart and I miss them every day. Katie is a girl who loves to be near or on me. It is her place and she loves me. She gets most of the bed.

  12. Holly has taken over the bed. I think this is her safe place from which to get to know her new home. Maybe someday she will be like Renn surveying his domain from the top of the bookcases.

    1. That's how it starts: first the bed, then the world! Or at least your world. If she's not under the bed but on it, then I think she's quite comfortable with you.

  13. Renn looks so handsome and happy with "his" perch on the bookshelves. Ralphie is my gentle one who I just can't evict from my pillow when I find him there at night. When I wake he likes to touch me with his paw and sometime clean my hair and cheek.
