The Intimidator

The hard-food bowl fills. There may still be some food remaining in it, but when the sound of it being filled reaches feline ears, they come, especially Josie. She always seems to have eaten first. Even Tungsten allowed my Chubs to eat first. And when someone else gets to the food mat ahead of her, or is already there, the Great White stares.

I move her on, but she returns. And stares. Not many cats can withstand it. Cammie crouches low and tries to ignore her sister, but doesn’t eat, and eventually bounds away with a hiss. Tucker doesn't even bother trying. Renn attempts to eat; I encourage him. But someone is watching, and he doesn’t like it. It’s unnerving.

Eventually, my big boy gives up. He leaves, and Josie has her fill. Sometimes, she doesn’t eat much. It’s just a matter of status. She has always eaten first, she always must. Cats have a great sense of tradition. And intimidation.

  1. How about a few bowls in various spots in the apartment? Josie can't be everywhere at once! :-)

    1. For their soft-foodmeals that's what I do. The hard-food is available for longer periods, so I allow Josie to feel her importance for a bit...

    1. It's the one from the house. I couldn't leave it behind. It cost $39; Tucker likes to scratch it when he's excited but I just run a vacuum over it and it looks new. I figured I couldn't part with that.

  3. around here it is every man for himself (though it can be fun when there are smaller foster kittens - they can sneak in UNDER the bigger cats and cheat)

  5. I have a cat that acts the same way Josie does. Alex always has to be the first in line at the food bowl. I finally felt sorry for my other four cats, and now each cat has their own bowl. I found that was easier than dealing with episodes of "Star Wars".

    1. Fortunately, Josie doesn't hog the bowl too long. It's just to show everyone she eats first. She's pretty easy-going otherwise, so I give her that.

  6. I have to play referee with the food dishes at feeding time.

  7. Josie knows what is important in life. The carpet is lovely, by the way.

    1. It's the oldest one I have and the cats have done all they could to it, but it's still in good shape.

    2. I have a carpet I hauled back from Turkey. It has stood up well to Jessica's scratching and clawing it a d still has her fur embedded in it.

    3. They claim our belongings for their own, and we never get them back - and we're fine with that. Sweet Jessica.

  10. With a stare like that, I imagine that it would be very unnerving.

  11. Every kitty deserves to have King/Queen status in some aspect of everyday life.

  12. I've always kept separate bowls (yes, when there were six, I had six bowls). They don't eat all the hard food at once but at least that way when I put the food in the bowls they all get some.

Sasha prefers to have his meal away from the other two. Most often on the couch or my chair. I guess that is his way of showing he is the king of his castle.
