How a Princess Dines

Cammie loves her heated cat-bed. Like Tungsten before her, she spends a great deal of time in it, though, unlike the orange one, my princess is not weak and thin. She lolls in the luxurious warmth simply because she likes it.

Cammie will spend so much time in the heated cat-bed that she will forego her soft-food meals in order to stay lying in comfort. As she is on the frontiers of kidney failure, I try to have her eat as much soft-food as possible. Certainly, she drinks a good amount of water, but I encourage the consumption of soft-food nonetheless. Sometimes, I will be able to coax (ie. force) her out of the bed for the few minutes that she will consent to dine. This time, I could not.

So ensconced in her curled comfort was she that she declined to be evicted. Instead, I had to place the dish on her legs. The princess then moved her head and mouth enough to eat the food. When she had eaten as much as she could reach, she stopped. I had to turn the dish around, so that she would finish the remains of the portion that had been pushed to the far side. After that, she lie down again, steadfastly refusing to move for a second helping. She would not even raise her head.

Cammie is not ill. She does step out of her royal bed to climb the tall cat-tree when she has a mind to look out at the wide world. And she plays swat-the-stick pretty actively. And of course she rockets about the apartment  - like her tiny orange predecessor - after a visit to the litter-boxes. She simply has no desire on a cold autumn’s night to abandon a perfectly warm bed, even if the apartment is toasty enough for a furless human not to feel the outside chill. And when she has no desire to do something, she doesn’t do it. Cammie is, after all, a cat, and my princess at that.

  1. Perhaps Cammie would like that served on a silver platter too? :-D

Ohhhhh, she does have you, her sole servant, trained well. (But then, don't they have us all trained well?)

  3. Aww, Cammie! Our Chucky has gotten a bit peevish about eating, so I too have placed a bowl of food with him in his beddy. Anything to get a few calories in! Wish I could curl up in a heated beddy until Spring...

  4. Ahh... Cammie gets served breakfast, (or was it dinner?), in bed. It seems she has you well trained, John. But that's OK. All Cat People are well trained by our cats. :-)

  5. Does Cammie have arthritis? She's older, you know. What may be comfortable for those with pain free joints may not be as readily acceptable by those with calcification.
We always think of our adoptees as cats who have had a loving home but have fallen on hard times. But I have come to realize that some of our cats have NEVER known a a loving, stable home where they were well cared for. Some have only known deprivation and neglect, no matter how benign it may be, or how supposedly good a dome they have had. It makes me want to cry.
I'm thrilled Cammie loves the heated bed so much so that she refuses to leave it . I am equally thrilled that you will indulge this poor, senior cat's desire to dine in bed, God will certainly bless you.

    1. I don't think she has arthritis from the way she rockets about from time to time. But she may have the beginnings of it, or it may just be old age starting. It makes me think that, once the spring comes, I will leave the heating pads in the cat-beds, and see how the beasts like it. Extra warmth even in warm months may be what aging bones want.

  6. That is sweet of you to spoil Cammie as a kitty should be spoiled.

  7. Aww bless. Miss Pops is certainly slowing down too. A few years ago she would be racing around all evening, climbing trees and full of beans. Now she prefers to curl up and sleep her life away.

  8. I too am trained. I have brought her (wet) food to the little Queen here in her room (the computer room) when she has been busy sleeping by the air vent enjoying the heat or the cold..whichever is blowing. When she has been not well, and didn't want to go to her place mat and have her meal, I would bring it to her and she always ate. The Vet was truly a bit scornful of me for bringing it to her. I replied I would do anything to get her to eat. My role is to care for her. That was a pledge I took so to speak, when I adopted her. You are a good Dad.

  9. Cammie has you trained well. Why should she leave her lovely warm bed when she can have her meals brought to her. Well done Cammie!

  11. Nice Cammie! My Sasha often gets his dinner in bed (cat bed) or on the bed (mine). I figure when they get to a certain age they can eat where ever it suits them.
