Black Cat, White Whisker

I noticed on the weekend that one of Imogen’s whiskers was white. It might be a new whisker or one already in place that changed colour. Her age, based on the estimate of her years when she first saw the veterinary, is seven; she is far from old. In any case, I don’t know that whiskers change colour the way that hair and fur does, with age.

No matter; Miss Silky has an odd whisker, which is sometimes hard to make out because her other, black, whiskers shine in the light. But she seems a little pleased at its presence nonetheless.

  1. She certainly seems pleased to be the subject of your camera. Precious's whiskers are turning white when they have always all been black/dark grey. The tips stay dark, but the roots are white. She's going on 15. Though I have a hard time believing it.

    1. So they do change colour with age... But just one at a time, and entirely?

    2. For precious it seems like each whisker turns White one or two at a time. Now on both sides of her face they all have white bases with gray tips. It took a couple of years.

  5. I checked 10 year old Pete's whiskers, and they are all black, just like the rest of his fur. But just like with people, there is probably no set age for a cat to lose melanin. Well, at least now Imogen can be proud that she is unique.

  7. Imogen, please please PLEASE give Chili Bruce or Manny instructions on how to grow a white whisker! CB had one when we adopted them, but he lost it within a few months, and has never grown one back.
