Tribulations Continue

Cammie is not responding as I had hoped after taking the Clavamox. In fact, she seems worse. It may be that her body simply dislikes the medicine and rejects it.

After a very early morning that promised improvement – she ate a small soft-food breakfast – Cammie began throwing up. She would eat or drink nothing, but vomited five times throughout the day; some of it has been pinkish with blood. She did consent to eat a very small amount an hour ago, but threw it up again a few minutes later. The same fate was suffered by some water I put into her by syringe. I won’t offer any more food to her until morning.

I called the animal hospital this evening, after hours. Fortunately, they have an emergency answering service and an on-call doctor. She advised me not to give Cammie any more Clavamox, and would report the situation to Cammie’s doctor in the morning. That veterinarian will then contact me.

Another cat I know of could not tolerate Clavamox, but could take clindamycin. I don’t know if that medicine will be suggested. Whatever the prescription, I hope it helps my princess. She is having a rough time right now. She hid for much of the day, but I managed to coax her out from behind the library’s bookcases by lying on my back and patting my chest. It took five minutes of encouragement, but she came out and lie on me, purring weakly. After that, she spent some time by the open window and is now on her favourite cat-tree, snoozing. I think that being out with the rest of us, and getting fresh air, is better than hiding, if only psychologically (and maybe just better for me.)

The heat that has been oppressing southern Alberta for a few days (37° Celsius (98.6° Fahrenheit)) has relented, and we had a thunderstorm tonight. The cats were frightened but it cooled the apartment, and a fresh breeze is keeping things pleasant. I feel that that too is good for Cammie.

Tomorrow will bring another consultation with the veterinarian. With luck, Cammie won’t need to visit the hospital again, and I can pick up some better medicine for her on my own. A haughty and healthy princess is what I want for my weekend.

  1. I'm so sorry to hear Cammie seems worse. Hopefully she is just reacting to the Clavamox, and once she is on another antibiotic she will quickly improve. Get well soon, Cammie!

    1. New developments have overtaken the use of the different medicine. Things don't stand still here for long, it seems.

  3. Poor love. The boys are continuing to send purrs and keep their paws crossed for her. Hopefully you'll get an antibiotic she can tolerate and she'll feel better soon.

  4. John; I'm sorry Cammie is not doing well, as always we all send the many blessings of St Francis. I hope by the time this comment is read, there is GREAT improvement with Cammie's condition AND she receives an antibiotic she will tolerate, and one that wont make her nausea to the point she refuses food. Not wanting to sound like Polly paranoid here; please under NO SET OF CIRCUMSTANCES allow the vet to give her convenia; another antibiotic; Nicki, Derry and mom Kim can attest to this fact, and I will just leave it at that. We are offline until next week so as da tabbies say; all 984 paws crossed N purrayerz a plenttee headed yur way ♥♥♥♥

    1. The doctor wants to try a drug called Veraflox. I've looked up its chemical composition and it is quite different than Convenia, though I will ask about any relation. Right now, we are waiting to see if Cammie will tolerate food, as there's no point in giving her oral medicine that is thrown up again. A stomach-calmer may be necessary.

  5. I am so sorry to hear Cammie is having such a rough time, I hope that the Vet is able to prescribe something that will make her feel so much better, the sooner the better.

  6. I am sorry that the Clavamox is disagreeing with Cammie. Flynn also could not tolerate it, but there is very little medication that he can tolerate.
I agree with the Tabbies about the Convenia. I am convinced that was the start of all Flynn'e intolerance problems, and it made him so ill that it almost killed him.

  7. I am so very very sorry to read of Cammie's illness. It breaks my heart as a cat mom. I have been through sad sicknesses with my last three ladycats and it took all I had and they, to try to get through it all. Please let us know how your dear Princess is getting on. Purrs for you and Cammie.

    1. Why Cammie still tolerates me after all I am doing to her in the name of getting well, I don't know!

  8. I just wanted to check back, see how Cammie is doing today. I hope your next update will be a positive one. I've not heard of Veraflox, will have to Google to check it out.

  9. Awful news. Poor Cammie, she's been through so much. Has there been improvement with her urination at least? An obstruction with overflow still lurks in the back of my mind. We're there any signs of stones in her urine?
I also am a No Convenia person. This is noted on all of my cat's charts. One of my cats had a horrible experience with this drug. But if everything else was tried, I would allow it to be used as a drug of last resort. But under no other circumstances.
Cammie is in our prayers and in our hearts. I know this must be very difficult for you but if you can, please keep us posted.

    1. She did wet a good-sized and compact lump. Convenia was not mentioned and won't be, don't worry.

  10. I am praying for Cammie. Has the vet suggested 1/4 of a pepcid tablet to calm her tummy?

    1. A Cerenia injection has now been given for that purpose.

  11. Poor, Poor Cammie. It is so hard when our dear ones are suffering. I do hope the vet finds the right medicine and Cammie is well again. I am thinking of Cammie, Tucker and you. And of course hoping the others stay well.
