She Talks in My Sleep

Dreams are interesting things. I enjoy my dreams, as the events that occur in them are usually much more exciting than what occurs in real life.

I recall that a few nights ago, I was listening to someone speak in a dream I was having. She - I can’t remember whether it was a man or woman, but I will refer to her as a female for convenience - was saying something that eventually resolved itself into a repeated phrase, a short one, uttered over and over; I don’t recollect what was actually said. I slowly worked my way toward consciousness after this and, as I did, the phrase became incoherent, the voice more nasal and gravelly, until, as I woke, it became the voice of Cammie, out in the sitting room, talking to one of her toys.

“Mrrrraaarrr…mrrrraaarrr…mrrrraaarrr…”

The princess’s conversation became part of my subconscious world, like something from Alice in Wonderland. It’s funny how dreams accommodate stimuli from the waking life. Though, if one thinks about it, it is not strange. After all, we cat-people do everything we can to include our cats in every facet of our lives. Why not in our dreams, too?

  1. In all the days that have passed since Abby left me I can only recall one dream she was in. I don't recall my nightly dreams only if I'm awaken suddenly and it's been a really strong impressible dream.

    1. Technically, Cammie wasn’t playing herself in this dream. But my late friend Tungsten has been in two of my dreams. I wish she would appear more often.

  2. That is funny. One time I was dreaming that I was getting blood drawn and I woke up to Joanie making muffins on me with her sharp claws.

    1. Oh yes, the sharp claws. They haven't shown up in my dreams yet - probably because they'd wake me.

  3. that's too funny. I remember when I first moved into my condo, I awoke to a "voice" and was about 5 seconds from calling the police when I realized Tommy had fallen asleep between my knees - on his back - and was mumbling.

    1. That would have been an embarrassing moment if the police had shown up after you'd realised what had happened...

  4. We live about 1/2 mile from the railroad tracks, and when a train comes through town, they blow the horn at each crossing, which totals up to about five within hearing distance. Late at night or early in the morning, that horn enters my dreams as so many different sounds; you'd think after over 25 years, I'd either be used to it, but it sometimes sounds like voices, or a siren, or a mournful wail. And then there are the wheels on the tracks. I think it's delightful that Cammie found her way into your dream!

    1. Wow, the trains are a pretty fruitful source of dream-events. I wouldn't mind trains in my dreams.

  5. I have dreamed of all of my cats from time to time. No surprise really. As you mentioned, they are part of every facet of our lives.

    1. I don't recall all of my cats being in my dreams over time, but it may be that they are such a part of my life that I don't notice their presence as unusual.

    1. I don't know if Cammie is instructing her toys or just talking to them as friends. She's still inscrutable in many ways.

  7. I think that's quite funny, and I loved Jeanne's comment about being on the verge of calling the police.

I have an active dream life, probably to make up for a rather "dull" waking life, though tend to remember only snippets at best. Sometimes sounds do make it into my dreams, but I don't recall any of the cats' talking every doing so.

I *have* dreamed of Annie (and Chumley too) on quite a few occasions, but most of those dreams are not pleasant, she and/or Chum have returned to life and I'm waiting with dread for them to die again. I hate those dreams. Recently I dreamed Derry died in May, though the dream didn't specify which May, so now I'm paranoid he will, in fact, die in May.

I'd much rather NOT have, or at the very least, remember these dreams, thanks.

I wish you *good* dreams, sweet dreams.

    1. I don't think dreams are predictions of any sort. I think Derry will be just fine - though I can understand why you could do without such worries.

  8. My cats don't speak to their toys that often, but Willow frequently talks to me, and we have some pretty lengthy conversations. I'd love to be Dr.Dolittle and speak fluent cat so I could understand what she's saying.

    1. I think cats understand us better than we understand them, unfortunately.

  9. I smiled when I read this. I love how Cammie managed to talk her way into your dreams and how your mind chose to get creative with her mumblings.

  10. Infrequently, i’ll dream i’m in house that has more rooms than i’d realized. I’ll see one of my departed cats, alive and well. I’ll say “oh there you are, you weren’t really dead, you were just missing”! Sometimes the cat in my dream will tell he he isn’t dead and has only been missing-in a human voice! Talking cats and there’s no alcohol involved!

    1. I would love to meet Tungsten or Bear-Bear under those circumstances. I can imagine what their human voices would sound like...

  11. That is funny that Cammie was the voice in your dreams. I rarely dream as I don't sleep well or long enough for them.
Lately though I have twice dreamt that I was back walking in our fields with Eric and Flynn on a gloriously sunny summer day.
I find it a bit unnerving, but at the same time it is reassuring.
