That Didn't Sound Right

I think some characteristics of life are shared by cat-owners. They may be a part of the lives of dog-owners and other pet-owners. Parents probably know these characteristics. But I know most cat-owners have experienced similar things.

I was lying on my bed yesterday, trying to rest, and I heard a noise from the kitchen. It was a gentle tinkling, as of pebbles descending a metal slide. This particular noise may not have been encountered by every cat-owner, but the phrase that occurred to me surely has been spoken many times.

“That didn’t sound right…”

Sure enough, upon investigation, I discovered an amount of hard cat-food that I had forgotten when I was re-filling the outside food-bowl. To put the oldest food on top, I set the remains from the bowl aside and re-charged it with fresh kernels. I had neglected to put the old back in the bowl; it had remained on the stove-top. That’s where Hector, with his nose for food, had located it. Not content with eating it, he had knocked some of it to the floor, for Zofia to sample. This was the tinkling sound, as it bounced across and off the stove-top.

As I wrote above, not every cat-owner has experienced this exact event. But I’ll bet at some point, likely many points, in time, something similar has prompted the thought, “That didn’t sound right…”

  1. It seems Hector realized you needed to rest after your surgery and he decided to feed Zofia for you. How thoughtful of you, Hector!

  2. Oh yes, we've certainly thought those very words before. How thoughtful of Hector to share the spoils with Zofia...

  4. Hector was very generous to share his find with Zofia. I think every pet owner has their hearing tuned to the normal sounds, and anything different is immediately heard and has to be checked out.

  5. Hector was simply thinking why not share the wealth when he pushed some onto the floor.

  6. We agree. Hector was being very helpful, at least from his perspective. At least it wasn't the sound of someone throwing up!

  7. Oh yes. This goes 'across the board' so to speak, for all species living in the home with you. Human or cat... dogs as well. I have thought or murmured "that didn't sound right" so many time. And there is not a lot more enlivening for the parent than prey brought in if you still have/had an indoor-outdoor cat. That prey being turned loose in the house by the kids bring home supper for you. Especially rodents. You hear and see those for a looooong time.

    1. At least I haven't had to deal with that.

    2. All the better. Very invigorating when the mouse climbs up your bunk bed, if you are a terrorized boy!

  8. Yup! We cats do have a good nose and we also(sometimes) like to share ;) At least this time the "that didn't sound right" was not anything bad...like a huge mess to clean up ;)

  9. There is a co-statement with this: "It's too quiet!"

  10. All animals have their own quirks, but I suspect the Didn't Sound Right phenomenon is one particular to cats.

  11. Oh yes nearly every night I hear Annabelle getting into something ... something maybe she shouldn't have! MOL

  12. Cats and kids, I can attest to hollering "what was that?" more times than I can likely count. In all cases, this was followed by scurrying feet. Occasionally the culprit got away...most times not.

  13. By the time I get to investigate the not right sounds here...I have two pairs of eyes staring at me with 'Who Me?' look! LOL!
Yesterday, I heard some thumping noises, sort of like hammering...and hubby was the one who said, what on earth? It was my pups destroying the drainpipe in which a little red squirrel had run for cover...and he was still in there! I took the pipe off the holder and let the dude inside escape...but they ran after him and almost had him...till he scurried up the nearest tree...
Sometimes the most michhief happens when things seem OK...but it is TOO QUIET! That almost always means trouble...here it means chewing/ripping something that was not their toy(s).

Nothing gets past Hector the opportunist! At least he shared his bounty/booty!

    1. I'm glad the squirrel escaped. Hopefully the dogs wouldn't have known what to do with it, but you never know...
