Thin Is In

I find that my cats become bored with the toys I use to play with them. That’s natural, I suppose. They don’t put much effort into entertaining themselves, but will be interested in items presented to them. String-toys are a favourite, but even they must be altered from time to time. For a while, I had success with a shoelace, but that too has palled. So I brought out a NEW shoelace.

This one is thin, very thin. In fact, it is so thin the cats have trouble grabbing it. This appears to make it much more of a challenge to them, and they love it, for the moment. I do not make the mistake of believing this will last; I will soon have to come up with another diversion. The games that other cats enjoy - Track-Ball and Da Bird, for instance - have very limited appeal for the beasts at the cosy apartment, so I usually take a direct hand in their entertainment.

I don’t mind. I like seeing my roommates enjoy themselves. Even Cammie joined in this time and fought with the thin shoelace. So, while it lasts, I present the beasts having some burry fun. For now, thin is in.

  1. Manny and CB used to play trackball for hours; now they start it when I'm trying to watch something complicated on the TV but cannot hear due to that trackball noise! Am thinking that Angel would enjoy a shoelace; she's refused to play with most everything.

  2. Your cats sure enjoy playing with shoelaces. Mine do too - especially the ones that are on my shoes. Mine also love Da Bird, but it lasted less than 5 minutes before Danni had it in pieces. I told her she's supposed to play with it - not take it apart, but as usual, she didn't listen. But my cats' favorite toy, paws down, is The Cat Dancer. They never seem to get tired of playing with it.

  3. we had a string toy a while back and it was fun to watch one cat drag it down the hall as someone else would chase behind trying to get it back

  5. Being a knitter I have plenty of yarn around for Holly to enjoy but her preference remains the plastic wrap in the garbage.

  8. Nicki and Derry both go for strings of all sorts, though I seldom bring any out. (I've gotten lax in playing with them, do more of that in the winter when they can't enjoy the garden.) A favourite is a string or wand toy underneath a blanket or better yet, a big piece of paper (like wrapping paper or tissue paper). You could always try adding some paper in, if or when they get bored with being "thin". :-)

  9. Sheldon will play with anything, but of course, he's a kitten still at just a year. Saku loves the wand toys even when the little guy is holding them, and Sasha has a special rubber toy he plays with infrequently. For all three, the mad dash from the bedroom, down the hall, through the kitchen and living room, and back again is a daily game too. Better still is when the sun room is available for zooming through too!

    Have fun!

  10. I love Stringy, here at my house. Da Bird fell off the end of the wand under concentrated attack. I found immediately that it was the string I went after with renewed spirit. I have spent over a year and a half loving Stringy. Mom puts him under my mats and wiggles the fans..I attack and get Stringy again! Mom also puts Stringy and part of the wand under my sheet of tissue paper. I attack. My tissue paper also over my track ball too, with just the ball showing, and I can attack both paper and trackball at leisure.

  12. Eric was the same. Apart from his Scruffy Rat he had no interest in toys, but bring out a piece of string and you wouldn't have thought it was the same cat.
