The Sleepy Paw

How my beasts sleep is a fascinating subject for study. Tucker especially makes it a fertile observational field. Much of the time, he sleeps like this, both on the floor and on his favourite armchair. Sometimes, I can tell that he is drifting off to sleep by the slow descent of his rear leg. When he suddenly wakes, the leg goes back to its nearly upright position, only to slip down again as he nods off once more.

But on the weekend, I caught him like this.

It was as if he had decided at some point to lift himself up, perhaps into a more comfortable position. Then, half-way to this goal, his body determined that his current position was comfortable enough, and he fell asleep.

But the paw remained where it was. I wonder if it fell asleep after the rest of Tucker woke up.

  1. Thanks for the wonderful share. It's great to hear on how many different ways our little fall asleep. We love the leg going up and then back down when he is asleep. Guess the paw on the arm rest was good enough to sleep right away again. Have a great day. Thanks for sharing the photos.

  2. My Alex, who weighs 17 pounds, sleeps on his back like Tucker is doing in the top picture. My other cats usually don't. I wonder if large cats prefer sleeping on their back for some reason.

I just read in your previous post that you may need to re-name your blog to "I Have Six Cats". Welcome to my world, John! :-)

  3. Tucker, you obviously try to entertain your human even while sleeping!

  4. Oh, to sleep like a cat! :-)

Maybe Tucker likes to air his nether regions, given how furry he is. Either way, on his back with a raised leg or on his side with a raised paw, he's adorable.

  5. Annabelle sleeps a lot like Tucker in the first photo. She is my only cat who does the other 3 do not like having their bellies exposed or touched, but Annabelle loves it! It's amazing how they love to sleep in the unlikeliest of positions.

  8. I have to wonder if it is a black and white cat thing...Saku sleeps in the first position quite frequently. The paw in the air is new to me though. Funny Tucker!
