Round They Go

As everyone who has had a cat for a long time knows, toys, locations and food come and go in fashion. What was once popular is no longer, and what was shunned from the moment it arrived becomes a treasured possession.

There was a time when the cylinder-house cat-tree was a favourite resort of both Renn and Cammie. The latter has not been in it for years, and my big boy had avoided it for a long time, as well. Then, a couple of weeks ago, I noticed Tucker in the cylinder-house. He had jumped up there on but one previous occasion, possibly just to show himself that he could do it. The cat-tree was thereafter ignored. Now, however, he is up there for long periods each day, sometimes spending the night inside.

As if that were not enough, Renn apparently noticed Tucker’s interest in the cylinder-house, and it renewed his own. Now, they are sharing time in the snug little abode. That’s fine with me. I just wish I would remember that the spot is once more in use when I am trying to conduct a worried head-count before bedtime, or leaving for work.

  1. LOL. Cats do like to cause trouble don't they? Whether it is turning up their noses at a once favorite food or hiding in some space...they certainly make life interesting!

  2. I was just relaying to a one-cat person, on how I often do a cat head count, either when I'm leaving the house, or when I notice things are quiet...too quiet! I've locked cats in closets before, and hope to avoid that action again FOREVER! But a new hidey-hole might be amusing for a cat, but the human will panic!

  3. Ahh, our cats sure keep us on our toes. I do nose counts several times a day, especially since I've closed cats in closets on occasion.

  4. They do like to confound us, don't they?

Even I do a headcount before I leave the house, with just two. Never mind half-a-dozen. LOL.

  5. I do a headcount before leaving for work - and I have just one. I do like that cat cave.

  6. That does look like a nice napping spot.

  7. I only have Miss Poppy Q to count when I leave, so it is not so hard for me, but she still can trick me occasionally, lying somewhere unusual. I always say goodbye and see you later, and tell her to have good sleeps while I am gone.

  8. I smiled at Eileen and Holly. I do a headcount before I leave for any reason too and I too have just one. I recall that Katie sneaked into the hall closet once upon a time as I was getting my coat un-noticed by me, and was shut inside for hours. I was horrified when I came home when NO way could I find her, nor did she say a word. FINALLY I heard a slight scratch sound--- and then, I alerted like a woofie on the closet door. She was in there. I felt terrible!

  9. Looks like many of us do a head count. I keep the cat food in a closet near my kitchen. One day I couldn't find my cat Ozzy. Tore the house up looking for him. I think I heard a rustling sound from the "cat food closet". Opened the door and their was Ozzy munching away on cat food. Back then I left their food in bags. After that incident, cat food is now in plastic totes with no room in the closet for him to jump in. He was one happy cat, eating to his heart's content!

  10. They are funny the way they suddenly decide somewhere that has always been ignored is suddenly the best place to be. There was a cubby hole in the bottom of one of the cat trees that neither boy would use. I don't think Eric would have fit anyway. I decided to use it for keeping the toys in, then one day I heard scrabbling noises and Flynn had managed to get in and was perched on all the toys trying to make more room for himself. I took all the toys out to make more room for him and put them in a box and he never used the cubby hole again!

    1. That's funny. It was the hole AND the toys, I guess. Flynn probably spent a lot of time making it just right, and then an essential part of the comfort was taken away. Humans!

  11. We do that at our house too. We had a cube we were napping in and on and now it is in the cat room gathering loose fur. We will visit it again in a time I suppose
