I Think I'm Allergic To Cats

Well, I may be allergic to Noah, at least. Soon after he arrived, I started suffering from the symptoms of a cold. I last had a cold more than a decade ago. And the symptoms I had this time were just the runny nose and watering eyes, no chills or fever or anything else that might have come from an actual virus.

I took some cold medicine but it had a minimal effect. Allergy medicine to which I then resorted had a better result, though the reactions I’ve had have been diminishing with time anyway. They were a minor irritant throughout my holidays (but still much less of an irritant than working), and seemed to increase when I was in a small space with Noah.

This is an interesting development, as I have not had allergies before, and have never been allergic to any animal. Furthermore, I think young cats are less likely to cause allergies than adults.

However, this also demonstrates that allergies can be tamed by time in some cases - and in this instance, a short time - and that cats need not always be eschewed or given up because of them. It’s true that this was a mild case but continued exposure to Noah accustomed my system to his fur, or whatever else may have been causing it trouble.

Now if I can get him off my papers when I write…

  5. Noah is just such a darling. I hope someone falls in love with him soon and gives him a fantastic forever home.

As for (probable) allergies, just imagine that every day. LOL. I AM allergic to cats, take a lot of generic loratadine (Benadryl puts me out, even the non-drowsy stuff.) :-)

    1. You're allergic and yet you've had the boys for years? And Annie and Chumley before them? Good for you for taking care of them before yourself. Their human sure loves them.

  6. I do hope your allergy to Noah is fleeting. Poor you and poor Noah as I am sure he is bewildered at causing you discomfort. From Eileen and Jessica

  7. Sorry you had a bit of a reaction to Noah, but I'm glad it's basically cleared up.

I hope the little guy finds his forever home soon...he's such a handsome boy. He'll make someone a perfect companion.

  8. Might the answer lie in your comment " soon after he arrived"? Could his fur have had something on it from his other house that triggered your allergy? Deodorizing powders for carpets, litters with copious amounts of additives, perfumes or sprays used by people that handled him??? Even though the scent is gone, the chemicals themselves still linger. On the next very warm day, you could brush him out thoroughly and use a slightly damp towl to rub him down. He's an adorable fellow. I'm sure he'd love the one to one attention.

  9. I know several men who are allergic to cats in general but tolerate their own cats. Maybe it will just take a while for you to get used to Noah..

as an aside, you could always give him a bath to reduce the allergens..

  10. Well hopefully it was just something on Noah's furs that gave you an allergic reaction. We sure hope that gets better. It is a little late to be allergic to cats. Anyway, hope that goes away. Have a great day.

  12. The doctor told me I may have some allergies to the girls and then he looked at me and said, "you'll just live with it, won't you?" Having two Persians with all of their fur can be a challenge, but I'd never get rid of them.

    1. A lot of people don't understand the commitment one makes to a pet. It doesn't depend on one's convenience. I know just how you feel.
