Neville, Not Tucker

Tucker is still suffering through his cold. He is eating, but not much; his air-ways are very congested. I hope to see improvement over the weekend. It is very worrisome.

But it was Neville who went to see the doctor today. He has been throwing up, and his appetite has fallen dramatically. Tests were run, though there was not enough urine in his bladder to provide for that test. Those that were conducted gave some cause for concern.

I won’t record all the details – partly because I don’t understand them myself – but the doctor is worried about the Nevsky’s liver. Readings of enzymes from that organ show extreme numbers, where there should be much more moderate amounts. It may be a case of pancreatitis, as the pancreas and its ducts are in very close proximity to the liver and its ancillary parts, as well as the intestines; all of these organs can be related when it comes to illness or damage. The doctor wants to run more tests, including one on Nev’s urine, and she wants to take an x-ray.

These actions will occur next week. Tomorrow, I will be receiving medicine for my suffering foster-cat: two kinds of anti-biotic and Cerenia. All will come in liquid form. Some Mirtazapine was prescribed today, to encourage the appetite, but it came in pill form. Though the single pill was already broken into quarters, I will leave to your imagination how well it went when I gave it to Neville.

In the meantime, the battle will be to find something Nev will eat. After no more than nibbling at various foods that he formerly enjoyed, he consumed a small but satisfactory amount of Z/D hard-food. I believe it is far from the best thing for a cat, but when he will eat nothing else, the distinction between good and bad nutrition becomes immaterial.

I hope I haven’t used up all my readers’ kind thoughts when Tucker became sick, because I think Neville will now need them even more.

  3. Oh no. Hepatitis? I'm struggling especially hard, reading this, because of Nicki's hepatitis + pancreatitis. I truly and deeply hope and pray that Neville will have a good outcome, that whatever is wrong can be treated without undue suffering on his part. I will keep him (and Tucker) in my prayers. 🙏❤️

  4. This must be so troubling for you John. Poor Neville, such a handsome fellow waiting for a home. He's found the safe place with you and I know that you will do all you can for him as you do for Tucker. Hope all the medications work for both cats and then over the weekend there is some relief seen.

  5. Oh no, it never rains but it pours. Can you crush the mirtazapine into a very fine powder and mix it with a little water to syringe down? That was the only way I could pill Eric. Thankfully Flynn was much easier.
I am sending good thoughts for both boys.

  6. I am very sorry to read of Neville's trouble. That poor boy. I agree with Eric and Flynn's mama...it never rains but it pours it seems. It will be a relief for you to know what is the matter at least. Then, there is an opportunity to help. Now- it is awful to see both boys feeling so badly.

  7. I have plenty of good thoughts and purrs for both your boys. I agree with the others, when it rains it pours! Hopefully, with all the good wishes and vibes, these two will recover.
You and your fur family are in my thoughts.

  10. I'm so sorry to hear that Neville is now sick, too. Purrs and prayers that both he and Tucker will feel better soon. Meanwhile, I've used Eric and Flynn's idea about how to get a pill into a cat, and it makes things a lot easier. I bought a pill crusher at the pharmacy, (you can even use a spoon), and I mix the powder with just enough water to dissolve it, and give the mixture to the cat with a syringe or eyedropper. Meanwhile, please let us know how things are going with Tucker and Neville.

  11. Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that Neville isn't well either. I'm certainly that his diagnosis will not be too severe.

Purrs from the kitties for both he and Tucker. It sounds like you'll have another busy weekend! Good luck, take care.

  12. Oh, poor beautiful Nev. I was hoping you’d be spared more bad cat news for a good long time. I will be praying for his health. (Yes, I do pray, in my own eccentric fashion.)

  15. We have all the room needed in our hearts for the boys and Neville has been sent lots of good feelings, tidings, purrs and prayers as have you all. Carbohydrates will give him energy so the ZD is good for him. High ALT may be from inflammatory process. ALP from swelling or some blockage of the common bile duct. AST is again a reaction as ALT. Surprised they did not do an ultrasound but then again you need a very experienced practitioner to read those.

    1. I learn from the replies too as I may need the information one day. Your being a nurse is a plus all the way around, Dad Pete.
