Portia Explores...A Little

Today, Portia ventured out of the library. I was ready with extra-thick oven mitts for grabbing fighting cats, a thick and heavy towel to drop between them or over one of them, and I was a bit anxious of the reaction. In the event, it was all rather anti-climactic.

Portia came out and wandered very timidly about the corridor for a few minutes. She saw the perma-cats, and they saw her. She hissed at Tucker, who showed no sign of advancing on her. Then she went back to the library.

I plan on having the library door open when the beasts are quiet or snoozing (not at a time such as dinner) and I am available to watch events; allowing my new guest to come out when she sees fit. So far, she has evinced no desire to explore her new home further, preferring the security of the library. We are in no hurry here, so she is free to set her own schedule.

As may be seen by the photographs, the perma-cats stopped by the open doorway of the library to stare discourteously at the newcomer. Tucker went so far as to use her litter-box. But I don’t want any of them disturbing Portia too much in the library. She clearly sees that room as her safety-zone, and I want to keep it that way. She needs a place to which to retreat, where stress – and strange cats – can’t follow. I don’t think her integration will be particularly difficult, though it may be long. But time is on her side, and so am I.

  3. We are glad Portia is exploring a little bit. All in her own time sounds great.

  4. Portia looks comfortable and relaxed. The fact that she and the perma-cats can see each other without "Star Wars" breaking out is a good sign that she'll adapt to her new home easily.

  5. ooooO! looks as if it all went well
on the first occasion then..! :).
Perhaps it's better when there can be
a group of them, there keeping each other
busy, wondering what the other will do!
    Never~the~less it's looking good!

  6. It certainly takes time for a new cat to feel at home anywhere. But in the presence of three male cats that's probably even harder. It is fun to see that the boys are evidently interested in seeing the new girl.

  7. Portia look happy to have a little exploration. The other cats looked quite happy to peer in at her too. Hopefully her integration will go well.

  8. Portia looks quite comfy with the other cats wandering in and by her room. As the old saying goes, slow and steads wins the race.
She looks quite content and will most likely continue to do so too:)

  9. This is such good news. The Perma-Cats are always so good when an un-looked for visitor comes to stay awhile,

  10. That is so good to hear that she feels comfortable in the library. Having her own "safe space" should help things along a lot.

  11. She's certainly making progress! She's lucky to have the right person, one who allows her to move at her own pace. :-)

  12. Portia really is a very good looking cat as her last photo shows. She will get the lay of the Cozy Apartment in time, no rush
