The Portia of Our Chambers

If all goes as planned, this little lady will be coming tomorrow to stay with me and the beasts in the Cosy Apartment. She will be called Portia.

Portia will not be with me permanently; she will be be available for adoption once I get to know her. There will be a number of adjustments I hope she will make: her food has been only hard, and not of the best quality; her litter is different than my cats’ and, perhaps as important a change for her as any, she has not previously lived with feline roommates. At eight years old, Portia has not known many people, either, so I too will be a bit of a shock to her.

I don’t think she need start out in the bathroom. I will place her in the library, where there will be comfort and light and fresh air, and also a heated towel-bed on the couch, if she wants it. Something that I am viewing with some trepidation is that she has previously been allowed out of her house (just into the house’s yard) whenever she has asked. It’s the asking that worries me a bit, especially if it comes at night.

However, I will confront difficulties when and if they arise. The goal is to make my house-guest comfortable, to put her at ease, and to get to know her, the new “Portia of our chambers”.

  1. OH my goodness. Did Portia's person pass away? I ask, as she is of a certain age if you will...and usually, when they are available at that age, their mom or dad has passed away. Only hard food? She's made it this far but I cannot help but continue to believe wet food is a boon to their systems. I hope to goodness she can get along with her new housemates. Whew..

    1. Fortunately, it can be reported that Portia’s people haven’t died; however, their situation has made it impossible for her to stay with them.

    2. Oh, that's so sad. Portia was lucky to find new people to care for her. So many cats in her situation wind up in a shelter or on the streets.

  3. She will be a lovely addition for the time. Hopefully she will not
have a full selection of songs to sing too loudly or too late.

  4. Portia, you may not know it, but you are on the brink of wonderful things! We know that John will make you welcome, and we hope that you find him...and the other cats in the cozy apartment...enjoyable to be with.

  5. Pretty Portia!

Best of luck with her, John, especially as you wrote that she's not lived with other cats, so is not socialized. I hope it won't be as much of a challenge as one might anticipate, and my gosh, I hope your resident cats don't have conniptions over the addition of a newbie. LOL.

  7. Portia is just beautiful, and not to mention, very lucky to be staying with you. It may take a little time, but I'm sure that eventually, the perma-cats will grow accustomed to the newcomer, and who knows, Portia may decide that she prefers staying inside and that she likes the brand of litter you use. As for her diet - my Alex will eat only dry food, but since he is on a special diet to prevent urinary crystals, it works out just fine. At least I don't have to worry about him going off his diet and eating the other cats' food.

  9. Gorgeous Portia! I'm sure you'll do everything you can to make her transition to your home as easy as it can be. I suspect her reaction to the perma-cats may be a bit dicey. She'll learn to stay indoors I'm sure. Stanley (my daughter's cat) was an outdoor cat almost from when he was brought home. But that changed when she moved him to the small town. He still will make a dash for the door occasionally but seems satisfied with spending time in the sunroom when he can.

    Good luck!

  11. What a beauteous kitty you are, Portia! I think you will learn to love this new residence you are in,. and maybe, just maybe you'll be a foster failure, LOL!
We adopted our first kitty when he was seven or eight, and he did quite well, once he decided to like us:)
