More on the Floors

For almost a whole week, Portia returned to using the litter-box for wetting. The covering of most of the library’s floor with vinyl seemed to force her back to where she ought to go. But some days later, she figured out that a small portion of the floor near the door was uncovered, so she wet there. It is, unfortunately, a small square of space near the threshold which has never been covered even by a rug, so she wet on the apartment’s fitted carpet. She has now done it twice.

I have temporarily put a cheap mat over the spot - and she’s wet on that, too - until I can get some more plastic. I can foresee having to cover the entire apartment’s floor with vinyl eventually, if Po doesn’t start using the litter-boxes again, and permanently. For the moment, she is restricting her misbehaviour to the library. But if I cut off that venue by laying out vinyl, she may take her show on the road, and visit the sitting room or bedroom.

First things first, though. We will see what covering the latest trouble-spot does, and go from there. Nonetheless, I think she would make a happy and entertaining friend for an adoption-minded human - one who had bare floors in his home, for preference.

  1. Oh, drat. When you didn't mention Portia's box issues in your last post, I hoped that meant the problem had been resolved. If only we knew what she is trying to tell the world...

  2. Rats. I, too, had hoped this would resolve the issue. There's not likely a foster home available without other cats or pets, but would she do better as an only foster kitty? Is there any possibility that she wants to mark her territory? Ugh, I wish you good luck with this.

  3. Aww, Portia, sweetheart!
Cats tend to hold their stress in their bladder, and she may feel the need to find and use soft surfaces as a sort of balm to her worried self.
At least, that's what I've learned from other cat servants.
You'll figure it out, John, little by little.

  4. Rats. I had the thought that the problem was solved. I wonder what on EARTH made her start that up!? I actually doubt that she is marking her territory though. She may do better with a fresh start as an only cat. Maybe.

    1. She would do better as an only-cat, I am sure, but that isn't an option at the moment.

  5. What a worry to have to keep Portia locked up with vinyl flooring and
not out and about the cosy apartment. But you can't ruing the rest of
the flooring. Hope she figures out the right way to go and get on with
it. Good luck Portia, John needs it.

    1. Portia isn't locked up in the library. She's free to go anywhere. She hasn't wet anywhere but the library and, though she might, I think keeping her in one room continually would probably add to her problem, rather than relieve mine.

  6. Oh dear! Who knows what goes through their minds. I hope she learns to behave herself soon.

  7. Oh, Dear...just when you thought the pee pee troubles were fixed. Phooey. I hope she stops doing that, so that you won't have to change all the flooring in your dwelling.

  8. Oh Dear! And just when we thought things were improving. I wonder if it's time to discuss the problem with the vet. Perhaps medication would help. When Alex started to urinate outside the box for no apparent reason, the vet put him on Prozac. We eventually had to take him off it, but while he was on it, he did use the litter box.

    1. We've discussed it with the vet; there is nothing physically wrong with Portia. I'm loathe to put her on any medication while there may yet be an environmental solution.

  9. catster jinx....not saying ..WHY.....put some aluminum foil down in that area; cats supposedly don't like walking on it { this has been used as a solution to the ...counter surfers } ☺☺♥♥

    1. You were right, guys. And aluminum foil would work, I suspect, but I do still need them to come and go over the spot. I'll publish a picture of the place later to clarify. It'll have to be plastic in some form, I think.

  10. The mystery returns. I sure thought she had moved past that one.

  11. I think everyone has come up with, or thought
    of a solution..it's a difficult one..!
I thought perhaps that Portia does'nt like
sharing the litter tray, with any of the others,
she would perhaps prefer one for her self..!
HeHe! Perhaps you should put names on the trays,
so they know who's is who's...Sorry! I'm being
silly now! But! pussy~cats are very human to me! :)

Let's hope it sorts itself out soon..But! Hey!
What's a little bit of wee on a little bit of
    carpet! Bless! :0).

  12. That is really odd that she only goes in the library. I wonder if it is a type of rug or pad underneath? Seems it has to be that as she does not go anywhere else

  13. Oh - we are sorry to read this. We hope you and Portia can come to an agreement that will be helpful to both of you.

  14. I had hoped the problem was solved. Back to the drawing board, but I am sure you will eventually find the solution to this strange problem.
