The Eyes of Mr Poly

Tucker usually isn’t one to observe the outdoors. He likes to smell the scents coming through the screens, especially in the spring, but he doesn’t spend much time seeing what can be seen, except when I hold him at the kitchen window.

But we’ve had a small grey cat coming by our outside food-bowl recently. She is, I am told, an owned cat and will be moving with her family some time this month. She is healthy-looking and friendly. When the Tuxter sees her, he is greatly interested. Other cats will stir his curiosity to a degree, but this one seems more intriguing to him than others. (You may have to click on the picture and enlarge it, to make anything out.)

If she weren’t already someone’s, I might have brought her in. I suspect she would be willing, and would probably be adopted by someone quite soon after. She will have to be content with her current family, however, and the roly poly will have to be content with views through glass. I think, whether he knows it or not, he would probably prefer it that way.

  1. Aww- It looks like Tucker has a girlfriend. How cute! Maybe I'm being overly-cautious, but in all seriousness, John, I would keep an eye on her just to be sure she does, in fact, move with her family. It wouldn't be the first time a family moved, and for one reason or another, left their cat behind. Unfortunately I've seen that happen all too often during my work at the animal shelter.

    1. Oh, I know. Half the cats our rescue has taken in are abandoned. If they’re socialised they had a home at one time, and were either lost of thrown out. This little one’s family is known to my neighbour, so I am keeping updated on the situation.

    2. I've recently acquired--or, let's say, Fate has sent me--another cat. I've seen him around the neighborhood for five or six years, and he began coming around to my backyard for meals. He was very standoffish, so I assumed he was feral. Just recently, he decided I could be trusted, and let me start petting him. He instantly transformed into the most affectionate, hungry-for-attention cat I've ever seen. He now spends all night inside the house--I think he's scared of the dark--and a good part of the day. The poor guy was not feral at all. He obviously had known a home, and love, at some point. I wish I knew what happened that caused him to live on the streets all that time.

Anyhow, I'm glad you were able to find out this new girl has a family.

    3. It’s astonishing how, once they let their guard down, it not only drops but can vanish all together. That poor guy has probably been very frightened outside all of this time, and is undoubtedly happy to have a home again, especially at night, and a human to care for him. What have you named him?

    4. Oh, gosh, I'm glad Fate stepped in here!

    5. I had the same thoughts as Roberta, but if she's abandoned, at least she'll be taken in by you and cared for until she finds a better home. I hope that won't be necessary, of course!

    6. I'm not sure what to do about his name. He's pure black, just like the somewhat socialized ex-feral who's been living in my backyard for the last few years, so when he began hanging around regularly I dubbed him the "Faux Blackie." Now that he's made himself part of the household, I feel he deserves a proper name, but he's become used to being addressed as "Faux," and I'm a bit superstitious about calling him something else. They say it's bad luck to change the name of a ship; I hope it isn't the same with cats.

However, he now reminds me so much of Raleigh, I may have to adopt that name.

    7. When I fostered Kola, his previous people called him "Lola", thinking he was a girl, and never changed the name, for some reason, when they found out. I called him Kola because it was similar. Perhaps something similar to Faux would do. Or combine Raleigh and Faux in "Roe"... But I like to think that Raleigh has that legacy, too.

    8. Congratulations on your new family member, Undine! I know he'll have a great home. He's a lucky cat!

    9. Yes, whatever the fellow ends up being called, he's come to the right house for a loving home.

    10. The only downside is Ernie, who’s not exactly dancing with joy about having a new housemate. For the most part, things are OK, except when Faux tries to win him over by head-butting him and snuggling up to him. Unfortunately, this charm offensive just annoys Ernie, and he usually reacts by giving him a couple of little swats—“Hey, buster, respect my space!” I don’t think he realizes that Faux just wants to be pals.

  2. What fun for Tucker, to see a cat outside that attracts his attention. Makes a person wonder just what he sees in this one that he does not in some of your other visitors.

  3. Tucker does look very interested in his visitor. As Roberta said, I do hope they really do take her when they move.

  5. This is so very sweet to see Tucker making a friend. It was great to see the photo of them two. We hope they have a good time seeing each other when they do. Thanks for sharing. Have a great rest of your day.

  6. How sweet to have a through the looking glass kind of girlfriend! LOL! Hope she won't end up being abandoned, that would be so wrong...but then, well, she would still get taken care of by you, John, thanks for looking out for kitties in need.

  7. You always have to wonder when a newbie shows up, but I think the word is out on the streets as to where to go for help!

  8. We think that grey kitty knows a friendly place when she sees it. Nice that Tucker has some entertainment. :)

  9. They are amazingly alright with visitors. Katie still acts like an ax murderer is after her if one even crosses the yard!

    1. These boys are. I recall Cammie punching out the screen in the bedroom window years ago, trying to get at an intruder! That was my girl.

    2. Now. THAT is more like it. Go Cammie! I know I had Katie blog about how when even a dog passed by across the STREET, she howled, hissed, scrabbled at the window, screamed, and her hackles were up for several hours after the unfortunate departed her view! The Vet recommended static cling window covering and I had to do that on the west side of the house for 2 YEARS!

  10. Isn't that interesting, Tucker having been taken with one of the many visitors. Saku shows some interest in the birds outside but Sasha could care less.

Hopefully this cat does move with its family, but if not I know you'll ensure it is taken care of.
