Auric's Busy Saturday

Auric had a busy Saturday – for someone cooped up in one room until his quarantine ends. He spent much time playing. I brought him the sea-turtle toy. Unbeknownst to me, it had catnip in it. Now, catnip and I have had an ambiguous relationship since I realised that it made my first cat, Tungsten, surly and irritable. I generally keep it away from my beasts. But Auric, who has little to do while in the Cosy Apartment’s isolation ward, seemed to enjoy the toy.

He wrestled and fought, knocked and chased the sea-turtle, and had a great deal of fun. The catnip did affect him, however. Last night was movie-night, and while I watched the film, Golden Boy lie against me. He didn’t cuddle with me as usual, didn’t try to get close. He was friendly but gone was his habitual purr. Not a sound came from him all night. He did take an interest in the evening’s film, though.

The next day, when the effects of the catnip appeared to have waned, he was once again a snuggly fellow and his purr was deep, loud and constant. He was, evidently, pleased by the previous night’s activities, but just as pleased to have my company once more in the morning.

  1. He looks a happy boy in the last photo. I call the stuff "wacky weed" for a reason. But I use it sparingly for Precious. It usually brings on the want for food rather than mood swings. It'll be nice when Auric is out of isolation.

  2. That last photo melts my heart. He's so adorable that I can't imagine anyone not wanting him.

As for the nip, at least it doesn't make him aggressive, as it did with my Nicki. I have some years' old silvervine and that stuff is even more potent than nip!

    1. I have some silvervine sticks, which are the favorite toys of all my cats. They love gnawing them and batting 'em around. In my experience, cats who have no reaction to catnip *love* silvervine. I've been trying to buy a live plant to grow, but they seem to be pretty rare online.

  3. My cats love catnip toys. Like Auric, they chase and kick the toy, but they also chew on it. The effect lasts only about 15 minutes, however. I love that last picture of Auric. He looks so cute.

    1. He wants to come out of the library, all right, but, to his credit, he isn't making a fuss over not being allowed his freedom.

  6. We are glad Auric liked that sea-turtle catnip toy, and that the effects are only temporary.

  8. I am glad he has a toy he loves. Flynn never got bad tempered with nip, just silly. Then he would get the munchies and sleep it off.

    1. That is the sea-turtle Katie sent as a gift a long time back. Naturally, it disappeared after a while, and was only found again a month or two ago. I thought the new boy might like it.

  10. Auric, you are adorable!
We have that same turtle, but ours is years old and I'm not sure the nip is very nipping anymore.
Celestial Angel used to freak out on catnip, and Celestial PO'M didn't even notice catnip, but all of the other beasties 'round here just enjoy themselves for a few minutes, then wander away.

  12. Auric is such a gorgeous cat!

Sasha never cared for catnip, Saku likes to eat it. But then again, he likes to eat glue too. Can't trust him around a box with tape on it. I've never noticed any difference in his reaction though.

  13. All our kitties loved the nip, Pipo would be a zombie for a while, esp for fresh green nip form the garden. Minko was nip addicted and learned to open the drawer were I kept the nip infused mousie toys, LOL! I had no idea how a new mousie complete with the tag still on it got into the living room until one day I saw him actually snag another one out of the drawer in the kitchen cabinet. Too smart for his own good! He also would chew up the packets if he got accidnetal access to them, LOL!

Auric looks so content there with you! He seems so easy going.
