Her Name Was Minuet

Minuet’s ashes came to me a week after she died on August 20th. I disliked the casket I was given; it came from the emergency veterinary hospital where she passed away. I thought the receptacle undignified for Madame, though I may have been influenced by the dislike I conceived for the setting. In any case, I determined to find a better resting-place for my very oldster’s mortal remains.

It’s taken me a while, but I discovered what I feel is perfect for her. It’s a small, well-constructed box, with a hinged lid; I don’t think any metal is used. In the shop where I found it, there was none other exactly the same; it is unique.

Similarly, there was only one photograph I could have chosen for Minuet’s place on my memorial wall. It shows her in the good health she enjoyed much of the time she was with me, despite her advanced age; high up on her custom-built cat-tree, her face toward the light. Here indeed is my Lady Sunflower.

She is at last in her place with the others of my friends who have gone on ahead. She was my friend. Her name was Minuet, and I will remember her.

  7. I love the portrait you chose for her and her casket as well. All of your friends are well loved and memorialized by that love. They are there with you. To me, there is comfort in that. I never fail to speak to mine when I pass by or get something from the dresser whereupon her urn sits. Everyone else is in their carefully, with deep love, chosen place outside. Only Admiral is in the house with me. I wish the rest were as well.
